Aquabacs' Cadlights Artisan 50 Azooxanthellae Tank build

Thanks! Did you see what is under him ;) Got to try out today a little package that arrived from TB Aquatics, a Hanna Phosphate colorimeter. So far impressed with the tester; calibrate, add packet of reagent, set timer, and in three minutes read. Pretty slick...even gets WAF (No more mad scientist lab in the kitchen anymore). Also when I visited GA today I picked up something new they had in; H2O Life frozen Reef Cavier. It is made from Capelin fish roe and figure I would give it a shot.

Hey I for feeding anything and everything. Who knows what works. Let us know the results. Oh and I did notice ;) Jealous I am.

Interesting to see how the Reef Caviar works verus using masago from the Japanese market. One thing for sure, the fish love it. They went went crazy for it within seconds of it hitting the water, so that is a good thing.

Can you get Masago in a pure form? I only see it mixed with Corn syrup and other things.

I have not seen it 100 percent pure (I have only looked local) but you should be able to find it without food coloring and a few other things that can be easily rinsed off.

Good luck finding it pure unless you buy a fish to strip it from. I have searched high and low for it in a "pure' state.

Just don't get the ALK tester

Gresh, the Alk tester doesn't work that well? What has been the issue found with it?

Any chance of a Capelin and Prawn roe feast down the road from RN ;)

Did a short write up on the automated refrigerated feeding system on this tank for Reef Addicts and posted it up last night. If you have any interest in the system, venture on over, and check it out.

Hi Mike, was it you or the other Mike that had picked up those Gorgonian from Western Africa? Just wondering how they are doing?

That was aquabacs. I'd like to see how that pure white gorg is doing :)

Nice write up for Reef Addicts too. I think the fridge is still a bit intimidating for some people so its great to see it explained in simple clear format like that. I can definitely say the fridge and auto water changer saved me from early burn out!

The gorgonian has been cut up into smaller frags. One great thing about having a few ;) crinoids is that the dont mind hanging out on the gorgonians all day so prevent sections from being able to feed or receive sufficient flow. In time, what happens is a section of the gorgonian will die off, then they will regenerate as long as the crinoids are not perching out it. To prevent this phenomenon from happening, common sense methods are used to safely chase the crinoids off the gorgonians but the crinoids always win in the end:)

The crinoid with commensal squat lobster and very tiny commensal shrimp came from the guys at Phishy Business...have to thank Aaron again for the hook up!

Mike

Hi Mike, does the lobster do anything for the feather? Does he steal food? They are available from divers den, just wondering if my feather would be better off with one.

Nice shots BTW!

Tonight I ordered a new skimmer since I lost faith in my Bubble Magnus. The original pump on it failed a few weeks back and my back up pump that I had failed this afternoon. Skimmer had a good run and it is time to move on. Been having some technology bad luck over the last few weeks; home pc is shot, washed my 32 gb iTouch, wife lost her cell phone (not sure if that is a bad thing but it gave me an excuse to ditch by Blackberry ) and now my skimmer. So grabbed a beer, had a laugh about the streak, and life goes on :) For a skimmer I decided to go with a ETTS Sump Buddy 40 powered by a mag7. The skimmer I have seen in action and does some serious work on my friend's overstocked 120, so it should meet my needs, keep my fingers crossed though.

So far with one week in I am impressed with the downdraft Sumpbuddy 40. The break in time was minimal and pulling 2/3 of a cup of skim a day with 4 mini bioballs in the tower. I will look at upgrading the mag 7 to a external pressure rated Pan or Iwaki in the future.

I've always wanted to try a downdraft skimmer. How does it react to feeding? I've read they are more sensitive.
