I upgraded the skimmer on my 75 from a Remora Pro w/a Mag 3 to an EV-240 w/a Mag 12. The 240 produces plenty of foam, but it's always very dry/stiff and does not collapse into a liquid (at least not for the most part). So this dry foam fairly quickly fills the collection cup and prevents any more from accumulating. I emailed AquaC and they told me that this is common with lighter loads, and I should close the gate valve more to bring the water level up into the bubble chamber until the foam produced got wetter. I did this and it worked at first, but now I'm getting dry foam all the time and I can't raise the water level any higher. Are there any other adjustments I can make, or do I maybe just have too light a load for this skimmer?
I think I should also mention that the air valve is clean and completely open (which I think is supposed to produce the wettest foam), the injector is clean and the pump is working just fine as near as I can tell.

I wasn't happy with the amount of daily skimmate I was getting out of my AquaC EV-120 protein skimmer. A Mag Drive 5 pump powers the skimmer through a 1/2" ID tubing. The inlet for the skimmer accepts 3/4" ID hose so I switched out the 1/2" for a 3/4" and boy did I notice a difference. Almost immediately the skimmer started producing twice as much bubbles and foam as before. I'm glad I changed the tubing. The wider the tubing the easier the pump can shot flow through.

i seem to be haveing the exact opposite problem with my new aquac remora, i have the mj1200 on it and i'm skimming extremely wet. my tank is pretty well established and i'm getting alot of bubbles in the tank. its taking about 20 minutes to fill the cup, should i pour that into the tank or is that legitamat skimmate and should i get rid of it? any help is appreciated

You can get rid of it, but if you take out too much wet skimmate keep an eye on your salinity. You may need to top off with NSW instead of FW.

Have you put any addatives in the tank lately? Sometimes those will make the skimmer go crazy. If not, it sounds like you need to raise the collection cup a bit.

jason214, I had the exact same problem. I had to replace mj1200 to another pump and it fixed the issue. Now it's skimming very well.

Hello, I have a pump question. I'm running ev-400 with mag 24.. i have to admit that the pump is LOUD. I'm thinking about replacing the pump. Do you guys have any suggestion which one should I choose? It has to be submersible. I'm looking at quiet one pump 9000 model. I don't know if it's quiet or not and is it the right size for the skimmer or is it too big? Please help..

EV-180 Question

EV-180 Question

I posted this on its own thread but figured someone in this group would probably have the answer.

I'm building a sump/fuge for a bowfront cabinet so I'm restricted as to the sump width (front to back) so real estate is at a premium. Can someone tell me how robust the water flow out of the gatevale is on a 180? I'm running it with a throttled mag 9.5. I'm trying to figure out how much space I need to the first baffle to prevent any back-presure on the water outflow as well as minimize noise and splashing.

Anyone?

Thanks!

Kind of hard to quantify, but it's fairly strong on mine running a Mag 9.5 wide open. The flow is strong enough that, when I first hooked it up using a tee to direct the flow down, the internal water level was too high even with the gate wide open. I was able to direct the flow using a piece of 1" spa flex gently curved which reduced the back pressure significantly.

I use to wrap around the outlet a small mesh sock bag (used mostly for carbon/rowaphos). For a better free flow I would cut the bottom of it to minimize clogging and maintenance of it.

Here is a pic of my ev180 when I was running it with a mag 9.

I'm definitely not the person to get advise from building sumps as you can see.

If you have the room for something similar functioning, It should solve all those issues. The mag9 was running full throttle.

My EV120 was always skimming dry even with it all wide open. Maybe 1 cup in 3 days. It is run with a Mag. 5. I found out my floating salinity meter was reading way low. Wow, I raised my salinity from 1.022ish to 1.025. I now have the water level at the top of the black box and air at about 2/3 open and it skims 2 to 3 cups a day. I was thinking of modding to a Mag. 7 with a gate valve. Glad I raised the salinity first.

So moral of the story. Make sure your salinity is where it should be. WOW this thing makes the stuff now!

I think this skimmer is one of those things where everyone who sticks with it and begins to understand them a little better has a "Wow" moment. I know I did when I switched to a Mag 9.5. You finally get it dialed in just right and sit back and just admire the beauty (or filth).

Congrats on being patient enough to find out what great skimmer these EV models can really be once dialed in.

EV-200 (i was told its an older model?) i just purchased it with a mag 12 pump used ... is there any mods that need to be done with that skimmer..is it a good skimmer ?...i plan on using it a 120 gl with 30gl sump....thank you for any feedback..

For the EV200, and all EV's I am not sure of any mods. I think the only thing you can do is change the injector to 1" from a 3/4". It should be god on your tank.

im gonna use the mag 12 to run EV-200 does in matter wher i place the Y split it right after the return from the pump or just before the injectors ?or does it even make any diffrence?

Hey everyone,

Just a quick thank you to everyone here. I have the Ev-180 and it wasnt doing Sh!t with the suggusted Mag7. I have since taken everyone's advice and put the 9.5 on with 1" injector and tubing i.e. gcarroll injector mod...and LOOK OUT!

Night and day. Thank you so much everyone :-)
