AquaC CLUB!

Hi,

I recently bought a used Remora Pro, my first AquaC. I've had it set up for about 10 days on my 55 FOWLR now, and it isn't really doing any better than the previous seaclone was (which is basically nothing). It came with a MJ1200, which I know is too small, so I put a Aquaclear 70 (rated 400GPH) on there. Not much difference.

Can some describe (or even a pic?, probably a tough angle) to me what the injector looks like when you view it through the removable screw for cleaning the injector. To me it almost looks like a white PVC end-cap with a 1/4" hole in the center where the water is forced through, does that sound right? I read someone describe a sort of clover shape, but I don't see anything like that in there.

Also, I have a spare Ehiem 1260 (635GPH) sitting around. Would that be total overkill for the Remora Pro? It's hanging on my sump so bubbles not really a concern.

Thanks!

Alright, just to report back, I went ahead and tried the Ehiem 1260 for the past several days. Man what a difference!!! It went from producing barely anything at all on the AC70 PH and MJ1200, to producing a LOT! When I first started it up with the Ehiem there were microbubbles, but those died down within 24 hours, and weren't any more than the smaller pumps after that.

So, my takeaway is, it's a really good plug-n-play skimmer, but needs a MUCH bigger pump than stock. I think going OVER a Mag5 will give you the best results.

I have the regular Remora that came with the MJ1200 - skimmer is 5 years old. It worked great up until about 6-8 months ago. Basically produces nothing. I soaked it in vinegar and hot water overnight and ran it for a couple of hours the next day with vinegar and water. Nice clean skimmer. Put a brand new MJ1200 on it and it still isn't producing skimmate. Very frustrating since I don't have the $$$ to buy the Deltec I want.

So, I'm left with my only choice, upgrading the pump. Would I want the Mag 3 or the Mag 5?

I'd go for the Mag 5. Only concern would be bubbles. If you are using the bubble box, probably wouldn't be an issue. Or you could always dial back with a ball valve.

No bubble box, this is the plain old, standard Remora that hangs on the back of the tank, so the powerhead will be inside the tank. Basically I need a more powerful pump, but I'm not sure what flow rate I should go for and still be able to put the pump inside the tank.

Has anyone had any experience with the AquaC EV400 on this thread?
Just curious. My tanks are down, but I am about to start them up for another try after a crash a couple years back.

harleyreefer....

I have an ev400, and have been active in the thread since the early pages. There are many of my experiences documented here. Feel free to ask me anything, pm's are fine as well. I will post my pump recommendations.

I have been running an AquaC240 for the past year and I hate it!!! I get maybe and I mean maybe 1/8" skimmate per week. Most of mine gets trapped in the neck or on the top of the lid. I am running a mag18 w/1 inch injector. The airline and fitting are free of calcium deposits. I have had the water level as low as the top of the black box and as high as the middle of the (middle portion)neck.

I just bought a EV-120 and recieved it Friday. I just hooked it up and am waiting to see how it will work. I have always wanted to try the Aqua C EV series skimmers. I have had a few inferior copies like the My Reef Creations and a no name brand of EV copy. The EV-120 is installed on my 65g tank with 20g sump. I have what I would consider a heavy bio load for a tank this size and I feed a bit on the heavy side. In the past few months, I have tried 4 skimmers on this tank and I have not been happy with the results of any of them. The skimmers I have tried so far are....

Sealife Systems Sea Storm 150
Aqua-C Knock Off (no name copy)
Reef Octopus Recirculating 150
Aqua-C EV120

Im starting to wonder if it is actually the skimmers or my tank. None of the skimmers listed above have produced any noticable amount of skimmate. Hoping the EV-120 is going to kick in after it breaks in good and really impress me here.

I just joined the club with an Rx-1. Much nicer then the Geo I had before. I'd definitely recommend it to anyone looking to get a new CaRx.

I've had the Remora Pro for several years now. The key is having at least a Mag 5 pump, you'll be impressed with the output of the skimate. In fact I had to order a bigger cup from the company. Also Jason has always been easy to deal with great customer service.

I just ordered a Mag 3 pump and a prefilter box for my Remora. It'll be interesting to see if the pump upgrade helps.

The Mag 3 pump and the box is the way to go on the Remora. The only down side that I can see is the amount of space it takes up in your tank. But hey if we really wanted to minimize space we would get a sump.

i had both remora and remora pro and i put the rio 1400 that was on the pro on the regular remora and bought rio 2500 or remora pro and both produced how they should. Both worked amazing even though i don't use one any more they pulled out tons of crap only problem was they were a little noisy which was no big deal for me.

sniper.....First what pump r u going to use with the 120 ?? Now I know just about everyone here will look the other way when I say this, but my 120 is driven by a lowly RIO 2100 and does a great job on my 75 g reef. I'll post a pic I took last night, just that I haven't had the time to upload yet..:mixed:

A quick thought, try to feed water to it right from the overflow ( I guess this is in the sump) before the water see's any kind of filtration, carbon whatever.... u get the idea...The one nice thing about the Aqua skimmers is u can mount the pump remote form the unit giving it added space saving advantages. Make sure u wash it thoughtly with warm water first as this will speed up the breakin period. Hope this helps....

Well would like to say am a new owner of this Special EV180, lol. Already needs replacing and theres still plastic stuck to it and never seeen water :( wasnt shipped to me so cant blame this one on UPS or Fedex this time. Hopefully the next pics I post here will be one that is not cracked ;)
