AquaC CLUB!

Assuming that the injector is 3/4 inch barbed, my Mag 9 is definitely 1 inch threaded. The hose that fits on the injector is too small for my pump output. I have a 1 inch piece of hose over the output and then have the hose from the skimmer pushed into that piece.

I used to run a Mag 7 and the hose that fit over the injector barb also fit over the threaded output of my pump. With this Mag 9.5, that is not the case...

I bought the pump used, so I suppose someone before me could have put on a different outer piece.

Ive just recently found this aqua c thread. Glad I did. Ive had an aqua c for quite a few years and have been pleased, but only recently after getting the 1" injector have I become truly pleased. Ive had the 400 model for quite a few yrs using an iwaki 55rlt pump (must be an older model since my dimensions are a bit different than what is selling today ( 32 3/4" by 10 1/2 by 6 3/4) The customer service is just fantastic -- after emailing about the 1" injector they sent it to me for free...how great is that? And boy what a difference it made! keeping the back of the pump clean is HUGE to performance besides the typical back pressure , air line caked with salt etc... take the black cover off the pump at least once a yr and scrape off all the accumulated dust -- youd be shocked at how that effects performace.

Im a big fan of this skimmer once you get it fine-tuned. set-it and forget it -- then when you see performance dip a bit -- its only a couple of things to check(i.e. air ball valve caked with dirt or something caught in the injector (cerith snail or a piece of carbon/detrius usually). usually have to clean all the gunk off the neck every 3-4 days.

read somethign a few pages back about a different air injector -set-up. Ill have to read that section again if it gets smaller bubble sizes to figue out how it was done again-- sounds intriuging... have many others done that mod???

As mentioned above I have to clean the neck of mine ev 180 every 3 or 4 days. This is not an easy task as I have big hands which don't fit in there easily. Does everyone clean the neck with a sponge or does someone have an ingenious way of cleaning the neck without sticking their hand in there with a sponge?

any fear of residue from the detergent that was used to clean the sock, essentially adding dangerous chemicals into the tank?

I just use paper towels to clean the neck.

+1

This is weekly maintenance for me. The neck of the column is usually so caked in skimmate at that point that I can't see the bubbles. I'm using an underpowered pump though (Iwaki 30 on an EV-240).

I use a sponge but like the idea of an old sock. I won't use an old sock though but think I'll just get a new wash cloth and use it. It should make getting under the rim much easier as well as the entire neck in general.

Hello all, I have joined the club.

I have a EV-180 with the Eheim 1262 now on my 75 gallon.

I use the waste container and really like it ( especially the 'ping pong ball' that will shut off the discharge / avoid it from overflowing and the carbon chamber to reduce some of the smell.

But its really not necessary -- you can make your own if its out of sight.

nice Tom. Try taking the gate valve off and connect the "T" with the cap directly to the black box. I did that to mine and it works good. IMO the gate valve is a waste if you have the 1" injector. The water level should be at the top of the black box.

Good work in getting it foaming well right from the get go Tom.

It looks to me like you can leave everything as is. Your water line isn't visible in the foam tower, so (assuming the gate valve is all the way open) your exit water isn't backing up warranting the valves removal. The removal of the gate valve should really be viewed as a last resort for dropping the waterline because you then have to make another way to control the water height as I have had to do.

I recommend to play with it some when you feel comfortable enough to do so, to find out which settings will be best to your liking. Your pump is strong enough to work well with different air valve settings, so you may find that fun to experiment with.

Hybrid Acqua C 180

Hybrid Acqua C 180

I am using an aquaC 180 body as the skimmer in my recently set up 220 fowlr, plus a few sea fans and miscl inverts.. I emphasive body because I got the one inch input fitting, but pulled out the restrictive innards, turning it into a standard 1 inch fitting that fits into a 3/4 inch hole. Running into this fitting is an Eheim compact with a needle (or pin) wheel, the recently available $200 item mail order. The mass of tiny bubbles fills the unit, and fairly bubble free water exits a one inch fitting, slightly tuned to bring the less foamy water to slightly above the bottom of clear part of the tower. Very fine foam slowly accumulates like delicate clouds, growing darker at the top,and the whole shebang ultimately produce about a half pint of dark tea skimmate each day. The Eheim, it should be noted, is dead silent and extremely efficient at 37 watts. The tank is lightly stocked and filled with nearly 200 lbs of hand collected (by me) live rocks from 20 years of Caribbean holidays. There is almost zero turbulence.

In effect, I've converted an old AquaC that never worked as good as I'd like, and which used too much power, to a needle wheel with an odd shaped box (tha Aqua C) that just happens to fit my small sump and low overhead space. This hybrid, finanancially feasable because I already had the A/C180 in the garage, so far works beautifully, giving me three adjustment points: the motor itself has a power setting; the air intake is adjustable; and the water output can be blocked slightly with a valve until you reach the tower height that works for you. I'm watching closely, and it works as good if not better than anything I've personally seen in operation. Absolutely no microbubbles, btw.

I am buying a new camera, my first digital SLR, a Pentax 2000. I should be able to learn its basics in a couple of days. If posting pics here is as direct and simple as some sites, not requiring some other entity like photobucket or whatever, then I'd be happy to post a few pics. The 1 inch hose going into the top of the 180 looks basically solid white with airbubbles, as does the interior of the skimmer. With the skimmer's outlet wide open, with no fitting, a good deal of foamy water poured into the sump, and there were many microbubbles in the aquarium. I added an adapter reducing the outlet to one inch, and could then see a foam line at the clear column's base. By adding a ball valve, I was able to slightly restrict the outflow, bringing the foamline about two to three inches up the column. The foam was thin to start, but after a few hours it began to thicken and lift toward the top section of the skimmer. Under the foamline is swirling water saturated with white bubbles. The foam itself is almost motionless, white at the contact point with the water, brownish at the top. It expands slowly, chuffs up the tube and into the drain, partially collapses, then rebuilds. The whole operation is silent, and the Eheim is beautiful.

Ok So here is my dillemma, maybe someone can help me out, I have an EV240 with a MAG18, the house from the 18 is only about 8 inches so there is very little head pressure, I can get large bubbles that collect almost all the funk in the riser tube but have trouble getting the foam all the way to the top of the riser, generally they burst midway collect in the tube and completly foul the sides, my gate valve is open all the way and I have removed the air restrictor, after reading all 80 pages I am thinking I may need to restrict the airflow as well as gate the input of the mag, the water in the mixer box is very turbulent and seems to create only large bubbles that will eventually rise but generally burst in the riser...any help, I have been using this for a year now, I have about 200gallons TSV and heavy SPS with about 8 fish and feed heavily and carbon dose so i should be seeing some good consitent skimmate
