Hybrid Acqua C 180
Hybrid Acqua C 180
I am using an aquaC 180 body as the skimmer in my recently set up 220 fowlr, plus a few sea fans and miscl inverts.. I emphasive body because I got the one inch input fitting, but pulled out the restrictive innards, turning it into a standard 1 inch fitting that fits into a 3/4 inch hole. Running into this fitting is an Eheim compact with a needle (or pin) wheel, the recently available $200 item mail order. The mass of tiny bubbles fills the unit, and fairly bubble free water exits a one inch fitting, slightly tuned to bring the less foamy water to slightly above the bottom of clear part of the tower. Very fine foam slowly accumulates like delicate clouds, growing darker at the top,and the whole shebang ultimately produce about a half pint of dark tea skimmate each day. The Eheim, it should be noted, is dead silent and extremely efficient at 37 watts. The tank is lightly stocked and filled with nearly 200 lbs of hand collected (by me) live rocks from 20 years of Caribbean holidays. There is almost zero turbulence.
In effect, I've converted an old AquaC that never worked as good as I'd like, and which used too much power, to a needle wheel with an odd shaped box (tha Aqua C) that just happens to fit my small sump and low overhead space. This hybrid, finanancially feasable because I already had the A/C180 in the garage, so far works beautifully, giving me three adjustment points: the motor itself has a power setting; the air intake is adjustable; and the water output can be blocked slightly with a valve until you reach the tower height that works for you. I'm watching closely, and it works as good if not better than anything I've personally seen in operation. Absolutely no microbubbles, btw.
