I think that the Ehiem would not be enough juice (for the 240). I'd shoot for more like 1600-1800 GPH.

I'd say no, the 1262 is about perfect for the 180..
and you point out its its going on an oceanic 90... the 180 would be the way to go on that tank, if not just a 120.
the 120 will skim a 90 fine.

" i was wondering if the 1262 is enough of a pump for the EV-240. "

I was referring to the EV240. I feel that the Ehiem 1262 would NOT have enough output for this skimmer. The EV180 is a different story.

The best person to ask is Steve @ AquaC.

My experience over the last week.....

I've got a EV240 w/MD40RLT in the beginning it was really on the wet side. I eventually started closing the air valve slightly to get it drier. As time passed I was able to open the valve all the way. I was happy with its performance but in reading some people's problems with skimmate production slacking off over time I figured they weren't getting enough pump power until now...

I clean my skimmer about twice a week. Generally I clean the cup, the tower, and the air valve. Every now and then I would take the injector out and use a little vinegar on it. Last weekend I decided it was time to clean the pump so I pull the pump and as I am cleaning it with muratic acid (easy way) I wondered how it was even functioning it was so bad. I then used muratic acid on the injector as well (foamed like mad!). This really helped performance but it still wasn't back to the way it was when I had to throttle the air back. So I took a bottle brush or hose brush of different sizes, pulled the injector and ran the brush down the tube. Didn't really feel like it did any good until I started the skimmer back up. The sucker foamed like it did when it was new, I have to throttle air back again!!

I don't know if you guys are getting in that area to clean but I hadn't in more than a year of use. It made a HUGE impact on performance!

My EV240 has been running for about 8 months and I usually just clean the cup, tower and air valve. I have cleaned the injector 1 time and never cleaned the pump.

So this area you are talking about is under the injector? I'll give it a good cleaning and check it out tonight.

Exactly, under the injector.
There is a tube that starts just below the air chamber. I dont know if there was maybe some buildup that influenced the air intake or not.
I also used a small pipe brush, bent it and cleaned the best i could under the air valve toward the injector.

im looking to join the club... looking at the remora or urchin... id rather the "in sump" but i dont have an area that has a constant water level (my sump is a giant sterilite tub) unless i put it in my entry chamber (a 2 gallon bucket)

talk to me about how well these usually work...

i found one on ebay minus the pump with "a small leak on the inlet" going for 26 right now... but id bet itll go up a bit before it ends tomorrow... whats a decent price for a semi broken urchin pro without a pump?

The EV skimmer can be used with your application. just elevate the skimmer so the inconsistan water lever does not effect the skimmer.

So last night I cleaned the injector, the air valve and the riser. I ran the pump in a viniger bath and I also cleaned the area mentioned above with a bottle brush.

I also changed the plumbing a little. I used to have a ball valve right after the pump that ran up into a 90 and then into the injector.

I removed the 90 and the ball valve and basically ran the pump directly to the injector with a new 3/4" line. I also moved the location of the pump to take the raw overflow water a little more directly.

Anyways, all this has made a %100 improvement in skimming! It's skimming how I imagined it would skim when I bought it. I am able to keep the air closed about 1/2 to 2/3 of the way and I'm getting SMALL bubbles. I am really stoked and I hope that it will remain this good. I'm hoping that these resilts are more related to the plumbing change as that is a more permenant change.

Thanks for the help KAiNE. I don't think I'll be needing that 1" injector afterall.

Hey... no problem, just passing on an experience.

I agree, I'm not sure if cleaning that area made the impact or if it was a combination of things.
I know i will continue cleaning that area anyway!

I agree. I'm sure that if I notice a decline in performance in the next few weeks that it will become a part of my regular skimmer care. It's working so good now it seems to good to be true. I hope this keeps up.

I think it is important to keep a straight line to the injector from the pump as well as skipping the ball valve.

I agree, when i first got mine, instead of adjusting the air I put a gate valve in too. I pulled it after production tapered down and it seemed i didnt really need it. I dont have anything inline between the pump and injector.

Just an update since making some small plumbing modifications as well as a good cleaning (detiails above).

My skimmer has been producing about 2 times as much skimmage as before I made the changes and I couldn't be happier.

I don't have an auto waste container but I'm probably going to have to get one because I am cleaning the cup every day because it is full and I can barely keep up with it. They should have made that fitting for the waste container higher up on the cup to save me having to clean it so often.

Anyway, I am content with sticking to the 3/4" injector for now.

Cheers.

Here's my waste container.
Empty (big) carbon container with 2 holes in lid. The input side extends inside the container so that when the container is full it will shut off the air exiting the skimmer. This pretty much will shut down the skimmer.
I have had mine go wet plenty of times and haven't had a mess yet.
I also pipe in outside air to help with my CO2 issue.
Is it ugly? - yes
Does it work great? - yes

I am getting ready to setup my EV 120 on my 75 gallon tank..I was hoping I could get some shots of how people have their skimmers setup with the sump. I am looking at using mine outside the sump but not certain of it. I am a little concerned about water levels and how high I need to get the skimmer to settle with the water line....in sump or out of sump pics would be great

I have mine in-sump. The pump is on one side of a baffle, with the skimmer and output on the next side, to prevent reskimming the same water.

How do you have the water level in the sump leveled to the water level in the skimmer? Is it at the same level in both units??

have a remora for my 37gal. show reef and is a great product. The only way i probably switch to another brand of hang-on skimmer would be for a deltec... and thats only if they bring those prices down.

magnificent skimmer for the price.
