Captain coral, my skimmer is working well, I adjusted it as you said. I'm getting a good amount of thick skimmate/foam gathering at the top of the colection cup but it doesn't seem to get pushed down by more foam going up the riser tube. Do I need to make an adjustment? Mark

It sounds to me like you have enough air to get foam, but not enough to spill over. Correct? Strive for maximum air intake, smallest bubbles combinations.

I am a fan of tinkering around with them until you find what's making you happy. These EV units have many more adjustment combinations than your ordinary skimmer, and more time awaiting results(I wait 12to24hrs usually between adjustments), making them either fun or "frustrating" to use depending on the user. I feel we all should try different adjustments every now and then, to see how something else works. After all, you can always set it back the way you like it.

PS....adding new plastics, pumps, plumbing, etc, will effect skimmer performance for a couple days or sometimes more.

I definitely agree. You have to fiddle with a good deal of potential combinations and wait a good amount of time between adjustments, but it is worth it in the end.

sometime i doubt the abilites of the skimmer and other times i feel that it is better or just as good as the euroreef skimmers.
I am getting to think that that bioload may be a factor in skimmate production. Recently i have just recieve a new 120 gal tank and i had to move all my live rock and corals from my old 120 gallon tank. I had about 150lb+of live rock and many soft/sps corals. My tank is HEAVILY stocked. Well anyways, i also had to clean my sand bed because the person who gave me that sand had lots of coral/rock rubble that i wanted to remove. As most reefers may know, messing with the sand bed is not good and i would assume may shoot up the nitrates and ammonia levels. Several days after the transfer, my sump was finally finished and i was finally able to use my ev150 again. This thing just started foam immediately after i plugged it into the outlet. I did not have to adjust anything. Within 12 hrs, it filled up 3 cups of skimmate!!!!!.......believe it or not!!! In the euroreef thread, some guy posted two euroreef CS-8 and show the skimmate production within two days. I realize the color of the skimmate that was produced within those 12 hrs were the same color produced by the euroreef. These are the few times i feel that the aqua C is a great skimmer. The few time i doubt my skimmer is because you hear euroreef/asm user produce 2 cups a week of dark skimmate and i can only make a cup of week. COme to think of it, the tank size were also twice as big as mines. Ever since that first start up, i produce about 1 cup a week now.


for a $120 w/ pump, i can't be more satisfied! HAHA

well....i really mean i produce about 1 cup a day, not one cup a week.
It is still producing the same color skimmate.

The Remora seems to be getting a a hit to its rep lately, so I thought I would post my first results. Ive had my Remora w/ maxi-jet 1200 for about two weeks now, and it has been running on clean saltwater while I was waiting to order my rock.
The rock arrived yesterday, and this is what I got overnight. The cup is set to about 1/2 inch above its minimum level.

i use to run an EV180 and 2 remora pros on my 3 tanks. throught they were the best thing ever made with protein skimmer. then i ran into problems where i couldn't get my EV180 to perform as well as it always had been, so then tried ASM & EuroReef... they didn't work out. then i bought a H&S to replace the EV180, i would never go back. i'm in the middle of switching my other 2 tanks over to the deltec now. just hooked up the first ap600 and got a cupful of dark crud the first day from all the waste that my remora pro wasn't getting.
i still have one remora pro to replace. so, what i didn't know, i didn't know. i was a happy camper with AquaC... love the product, but there is better. hope i don't offend anyone, i still have a remora pro remaining to replace as soon as funds are available. i was a AquaC only reefer, soon to jump ship.

Well I bought an EV240 and a Mag 18 to power it. I will be running it on a 90gal tank. I don't have the tank set up right now (far from it actually) but I hope I get good results.

Jason from AquaC said that it is a good idea to use this pump but to be sure that I use a ball valve to restrict the flow in the event that it is too much.

I'll be sure and post a pic of my results once it get it going. Wish me luck!

I owned all my AquaC for 2-3 years and they skimmed perfectly, no complaints at all until my EV180 stop skimming properly and no matter what Jason recommended, the unit never came up working like when I first bought it during the first 2 years of operation. So, I had to go with something else. I would have never changed or even consider a change as the AquaC was working perfectly for me for several years. I will leave this thread now, sorry for posting my comments in the wrong place as I am new to RC.

brad23.... Is this for the 180? You will get biased answers in this thread, and I don't see anyone here recommending the asm. I have the ev400 on my 180 and love it. When you go with aquaC, you're getting a very sturdy cast acrylic product. These are very sturdy and durable skimmers.

I don't just want to cut it, I wanna skim the crap out of it (pun intended).

Well after using an ASM G2 for 6 months I moved to a EV180. I'm happier with the EV than the ASM.

Does the VC240 require more messing around with than the ASM? from what I've read it sounds like it does. I want something I can set and forget.

The EV240 will skim a 180 fine, I however am of the attitude that you should always choose the biggest skimmer that will fit if you want to overskim.

Brad,
If you want set it and forget it choose the ASM, although the aqua-c can be operated this way as well. To me, the aqua-c is not for someone who does not want to tweek and tune. By constantly tuning the skimmer you can insure that you are getting the most out of the skimmer's performance.

Here is the Update of my Aqua C EV1000. The skimmer is now broken-in and skimming wonderfully.

skimmer after 1 week since cleaning

24 hour of skimmate (approx 2 gallons). I just love when people brag about getting one cup of skimmate in a week. I do skim wet but I think it is pretty dark for wet skimmate.

gcarroll, what is the bioload on that tank? That skimmer is working. I've seen a mr2 with half a bucket like that of dry in 3 days but that was on some serious bioload.
I'm still trying to get my ev 180 to "kick" in.

Greg, That's fantastic! It's good to see that's worked out well for you.
I noticed that you have both the JG fittings hooked up. I'll assume those are ozone and calcium reactor lines? Also, I've never run my skimmer wet, but now I want to try it and see what happens. I was hoping maybe you could elaborate some on how you set yours to run wet. (and yes that does look dark for wet skimmate!)
