I do have the mag 7,
Cant do it without a flood?????

Right, you're using an EV120, right?

I think there's the difference. I'm using it on my EV180.

Frank You should be able to run the air wide open with a mag 5. Mine came with a mag 5 but I was not happy with the performance. If you think you might want to try it just buy a mag 5 impeller. I've been where you are now with my ev120. I started with a mag 5 then went to a mag 7. I wasn't happy with either of these pumps. Next I tried a panworld px-40, 400 gallons per hr but tons of pressure it worked much better than anything I've tried. Next I tried a Panworld PX-50, 600 gallons per hour and even more pressure. WOW what a differance now its skimming like it should be. I'm gone this weekend but I'll try to post some pictures early next week. Good luck, Mark

Here is my new EV-180 from marinedepot.com, i have it running with a mag 9.5 and the skimmer is running external from the sump. It sits on a shelve which is connected to my stand, inside my stand is my sump, i have had this thing running for 16 hours and it has started the foaming process, this thing is a little hard to dial in, the air adjustment is very touchy, i have some shots of it and bubble size, i also have a link to a video of the riser of the skimmer. All you with EV-180s please help me out with fine tuning this sucker (bubble size / water height in the riser tube) I am getting foam that is coming into the cup as you see in the picture, but i think this thing can do better if i do a little adjusting, it has already beat my berlin turbo !

Feeder, I looked at your video. It looks like you are running a lot of air, getting large bubbles. Here is the adjustment that works best on my EV-180 with the Eheim 1262:

- Remove the output gate valve. This will put the water level near the top of the external box without having to restrict the pump. However, it appears you cannot do this because you have the EV-180 external to the sump.

- Start with the air valve almost fully closed. Gradually open it until most of the water foams up with tiny bubbles. Wait a few hours before opening the air valve further.

- Gradually the foamy water should produce a thicker head of foam that rises. This foam will quickly collapse if you feed the tank, put your hands in the water, etc.

- Check how high this foam rises. It should rise just enough to push some dry skimmate over the top.

- If you want wetter skimmate, open the air valve a tiny bit more, but not too much because with too much air, the skimmer will become less predictable.

I disagree with the previous post Feederfish. I think you're on the right track. You cannot have large bubbles with the water line that high. It looks to me that the large bubbles are a result of the foam expanding. Also, any less air and you'll experience a performance loss. Removing the skimmers exit gate should be a last resort because you loose precise control over the water height. (Those who do remove the gate and still have a good water height have gotten lucky) Kudos!

That's just what this thread needed.... movies. :)

It's a tradeoff either way.

More air = occasional overflows (often just clear liquid), or for some people, no skimmate at all

Less air = more stable foam, lower volume of skimmate

Yeah, I think his expanded foam bubbles may be large from turbidity in the riser from the water line being slightly too high. :) It also looks to me to be the bare minimum of air injection for good skimmate.

Hi all,
I can only speak from my past week of trying all different things with my EV 120.
I had mine set up with the foam height that looks where yours is.
I didnt think that I should be getting all that dirt at the top of the riser. Last night I increased the air to bring the foam up to about a 1/2 inch from the top of the riser.
I cant believe the gunk of dry crap that this skimmer has been pulling out all day.
It does take time to get it right, and I was getting ready to quit and mark it off as a piece of junk but it really is working excellent now.
I didnt think my tank had all that crap in it.
I keep the water level at the top of the box, Now and than I can see the level just at the bottom of the riser like yours in the video.
Im very happy with the skimmer right now , I hope things dont change on its performance. Its the first day of it really working up to my par.
Frank

I'm glad that you're happy now Frank. It is frustrating, at times, helping people within the confines of the thread here, and none of us want to see anyone throw in the towel. :)

Well here's a update on the performance of my ev 120.
After skimming perfect for the last two days the skimmer has changed from a nice dry foam to a water wet foam over filling the waste collection container.
None of the settings have changed, It seems this skimmer has a mind of its own? Bummer....:(
Frank

Frank, the same happens to me. So the adjusment that I finally accepted is to set the air so that most the time it is not skimming anything, but with occasional overflows that only total a couple inches per day. This way, it is skimming-by-overflow and this overflow is minimized.

I am not used to this behavior (comparted to my old needle-wheel turboflotor).

Maybe others can share with us how much dark skimmate they produce per day/week and how often they get overflows. I have seen some nice photos of the cups, but it would be interesting to hear from those who have a consistent volume of dark skimmate.

ive run out of options on things to try,
I really cant afford another pump, but would love to try the ehiem 1260, but I have a feeling it wont make a difference.
Frank

Does anyone have a 1260 not being used that maybe we could trade for something that you might need?

Frank

Checked on my EV-180 after work today, has now been running for a weekend, and this thing has already skimmed more than my berlin would have in a week, my riser is already completely brown, with the setup I have I am glad i went with the Mag 9.5. I do notice when i feed or do a small water change that the skimmer does stop foaming but in 1-2 hrs then the foam is back. Thanks for all the info here on RC, thats the reason i went with the Aqua C !
I think the Aqua C, my Metal Halides, and the RO/Di have been the best things i have ever purchased for a reef tank!

Here is the latest Picture o

f the ev 120 with a Panworld px40.

The text is suppose to say, here is the latest picture of my EV120 driven by a Panworld px40

Frank, it seems to me that pressure is more important than volume, the last 2 pumps I tried (both external) had lots of pressure but not much volume. 1 pump was rated at only 400 GPH and the pump I'm using now I think is rated at 600 GPH. Both worked good but the 600 GPH was a bit better. You mentioned you can't get a new pump now, maybe a used pump? Watch the used equipment for sale or trade maybe you will come across a deal there. I wonder if anyone has ever tried a mag9 on an EV 120, it should have more pressure than a mag7. I think you can get a used mag9 for a good price. Have you tried a gatevalve on the pump with the air open all the way and your return valve closed to the point the water is at the top of the black box? That is what the people at Aqua C recommend. Have you talked to Aqua C about your problem, maybe they will have some other ideas. That might be worth a try if you haven't done that yet. Keep us posted on your progress. Mark

i have a a couple people pm me about my skimmer mod
it was made by aqua c about 7 inches high total of 19 inches high for the tube
it is removable from the base to be cleaned. works like a champ with a mag 18
heres a pic for those that missed it

and also get small and some large bubbles in the riser
i donr worry so much about the large or small bubbles. i worry about the stuff in the cup. and i run the air wide open. in fact i take the air adjustment off.
