aquamaxx ConeS CO 1 skimmer review

thought this was interesting for those who like the CO 1 but want something smaller

Might know this already but most aquamaxx stuff is the same as JNS.
Skimmers and dosing containers are the same....

So if people want the same skimmer look for the JNS version:

Dude, you are my effing hero. I knew they were the same, but could never find the JNS version stateside. I just ordered it, and even found a 10% off and free shipping coupon. If it is really in stock and it really comes, you made my week.

Big ALS is in canada I believe so that 10% coupon and free shipping is a huge score! Pm me with that info or post here pleeeeeasse lol

I used to order stuff from them all the time.. they seemed very reliable and used to be a sponsor here...

It allowed me to put 10 in my shopping cart but not 15 then I tried 10 again and it would not.. now it will only allow 7. So they must keep it up to date with stock... You guys are buying them up fast it looks like,,,

That is really reassuring...it sounds like they have realtime inventory.

If that doesn't pan out, there's a physical store here selling an co-2 for $349.99. They'd probably ship it to you. the owner is a nice guy.

how long did shipping normally take?

No problem with the silencer filling with water?

Unscrew the black nylon bolt and take the silencer off its base plate. Take it with you to a Home Depot or lowes and find the plumbing section. Get a small roll of Teflon tape and match up a thin o-ring to the diameter of the silencer cylinder. You can get it a little undersized (22-24 mm).

O-ring;
The o- ring will sit in the groove that the silencer tube sets into. Get a thin o-ring. Too thick and the threads on the bolt may not catch.

Teflon tape;
Cut off a 2 inch piece and wrap it around the end of the black nylon bolt that threads through the silencer into the base plate.

Your leak will be solved! Not everyone experiences this but I did and it worked perfect and was super easy to do.

Skimmer not performing;
1st, I would suggest investing in an ATO (tunze. Jbj etc.). Consistent sump level is vital to skimmer performance.
2nd, you state you are running it at 8 inches. I would suggest running it at 9 to 9.25 (if your sump allows). This way you can open the stand pipe more, allowing more tunability. From what I gather in reading your posts, your internal skimmer water level is set too high. If it's set too high, the initial foam head will belch into the cup prematurely and essentially knock itself down along with any promising results, then it will start all over again.

Do you see an air/water line in the skimmer when it's running????. Not the foam head!

This is the fine line that separates the bubble swirling water and uniform bubbles beginning to rise up the transition. If you can see it then I would suggest opening or closing your standpipe until you see that line at around 1/2 inch below the white collar that the cup twists onto. I you can do that, then just leave it alone for a day (no tweaking!) and report back.

Pm me if you have any questions. I will be out and about today but I will contact you as soon as I get a chance. This skimmer should not be giving you so much headache, so let us see if we can help.

I have trouble seeing a distinct swirling/rising bubble transition line, but when I dial it back (about 1-1/2 turns) there appears to be this transition zone, but only with about a 1/2 inch of foam on top. I set this per your advice (see picture). The foam level hasn't changed overnight, and has stayed at essentially the same level below the flange.

I re-measured the water level, and it is currently sitting in 9" of water (the height of the plastic tub). The overflow dumps into this tub (I used a cut-off Eheim filter sock about 4" long that doesn't trap anything to cut-down on noise and salt creep). The egg crate you see under the skimmer is actually under the tub to lift it so that when I shut-off the return pump, the sump level doesn't rise above the top of the tub.

The gunk you see around the collar for the cup as well as in the collection side of the cup is left over from the last over-flow event, which I didn't clean. The lid was similarly dirty, but I had cleaned this. The stuff you see coating the collection plate is on the foam/under side and is the stuff I want to collect in the skimate! You can see a clear area towards the bottom of the collection cup, which is basically where the foam had been breaking for the last several days after adjusting after the last overflow event.

My problem has been that if I adjust the foam to break which an occasional bubble breaking through the hole in the collection plate, within a couple of days the skimmer goes into serious overflow mode as I described in my previous post.

If the air/water line is visible and below the collar beneath the cup flange then leave it where it is. Don't worry that you didn't see results over night. Your issue most likely is you are setting it to push foam into the collection cup before it has broken in. When it starts breaking in is when you see this burst of foam into your cup and since it is set too high, it knocks down the foam head and the process starts over again.

A skimmer will develope a transparent slime coat within the body that is unique to its water level setting. If you had it set high before, then it needs time to adjust for the new lower internal water level. Resist the urge to keep tweaking it. Leave it set low (where it's at) and wait for a good foam head to form and STAY formed. If/when your foam head begins to develope and remains consistent for a day or so, then I would start making adjustments. The adjustments should be made SLOWLY and in small monitored increments. After each small adjustment you should have a monitoring period of maybe an hour or so to see if the adjustment was sufficient. If you dont wait long enough and tweak it again before things have settled in, then you will be running in circles. Skimmers are all about patience.

I run my sump level about a quarter inch higher than what yours is in the pic. My level is just over the flange. Yours looks to be right at the flange so you may or may not want to raise the sump level a little higher once you give it some time to settle in at your current mark. If you end up running the sump water level above the flange then most likely you will need to use the oring and Teflon tape for the silencer.

I strongly suggest getting an ato and ditching that box it's in. You will thank us later.
