aquamaxx ConeS CO 1 skimmer review

Take a look ate the seaside aquatics cs5.5 and their es5. Both run sicces and are a good bargain. Their intake venturis are not as clean as the aquamaxx but they work well.

Salty supply has them

Edit; forgot to mention that although the SSA skimmers run sicces, they may be a bit louder than the aquamaxx due to the volute design, needle wheel and intake differences. I ran a replacement sk400 from SSA on my co1 for a while and it was quite a bit louder. Not unbearable though

Thanks. Have you seen the new Sea Side Aquatics DC-120? I really like DC pumps.

Yes I did see them at reefapalooza when it was in Costa Mesa. Tom who used to own so cal tropical was showing them off. They even make a tiny little one rated up to 50 gallons. He was still setting things up when I stopped by so he didn't have one up and running. They looked promising.

I am really considering giving one a shot. I can not find anyone that has first hand experience with one though...

looks like they use waveline DC pumps and the cone transition is similar to the CO 1. I use a waveline for my return (DC3000-V1) and it's been a solid pump for over a year now.

decisions, decisions!!!

Hmmm...being able to control the speed of the skimmer pump with my Apex would be pretty cool.

ya

apex would be needed since the pump has no controller.

I doubt you would use it other than to shut it down during WCs or feedings. Since it is sold without a controller it most likely has been designed to operate at full speed.

They are too new to have many (if any) reviews but who knows, they may be a hidden gem of a skimmer. Try and contact Tom at SSA directly. He knows skimmers pretty well and could give you some more info and/or direct you to someone who may be running one.

i gave up trying to find an aquamaxx co1. i got the eshopps 120 cone with sicce. badass skimmer"¦same as sea side aquatics es5 with sicce really. grb an eschoops cone on sale"¦also eshopps is known to have the best customer service. if anything goes wrong with sicce pump within three years they'll send a new pump"¦.

Well, I made on offer to a seller on ebay that had the SSA DC-120 listed for $250 OBO that I did not expect him to take, and he took it. Then about an hour later I got a lead on someone that may be selling their CO-1...go figure. So, I may end up with both...lol

great! if you get them both you can do a head to head comparison of how they perform.

I obviously know how well the CO1 performs but I'm very interested in the sea side aquatics. I would be a guinea pig but I've done that too much in the past already:headwallblue: I pre-ordered the vertex omega a while back, but backed out on it. I felt it had too much air for the body and from many of the reviews it seems I did the right thing.

I am relatively new to saltwater, and was lucky enough to get a ConeS CO-1 several months ago for my first system (a 72 gallon FOWLR with a 20 gallon sump). I purchased this skimmer primarily based on the great reviews I read here. I have a relatively light bio-load (3” hippo tang, 2 B/W clowns, and a green chromis plus clean-up crew of hermit crabs, snails, and peppermint shrimp)

I have had a hard time adjusting it to consistently produce good skimate. It either produces minimal skimate, or has a serious overflow problem. If I adjust the foam level, it will run fine for up to several days, then either start to overflow or the top of the foam level will drop a couple of inches so that only the underside of the angled collection plate collects 'gunk' on the foam side, with no liquid skimate making it through the plate into the collection cup. When I first installed it (back in January) I was doing hyposalinity treatment for ich, and based on reasearching this site I knew that skimmers don't work well under these conditions, so wasn't surprised I was having trouble tuning it.

When I brought the system back to 1.025 SG I continued to have problems. I don't have an ATO system (yet) but I didn't let the water level drop more than a 1/4" before topping off, but continued to have problems tuning.

I thought the problem might be that I was shutting both my return pump and skimmer off during feeding time (please no flaming!) and a slightly fluctuating water level. Subsequently, I have put the skimmer in a plastic box in my sump and I leave it running 24/7 with a constant water level even when I shut off the return pump.

This week was typical. When I left to travel for work on Sunday, the skimmer was set for the foam to slightly break just below the hole on the collection plate. My wife was feeding the fish for me, and Monday night she said everything seemed fine, with maybe ¼” of weak tea colored skimate. When I returned Tuesday night, the collection cup was full, and lid had scum on it, indicating it had seriously over-flowed. I drained the cup, and continued to drain it while the skimmer continued to dump foamy water through the collection plate. Thinking it may be a slug of stuff that had to clear, I continued to drain the cup (which filled in about 2 minutes) but even after collecting a ½-gallon of water of clear water, the overflow did not slow down. To get the level on the skimmer right so it wasn’t overflowing, I had to turn the adjustment valve about a quarter turn. That set the top of the foam level to just below the hole in the collection plate so it wasn’t dumping water into the cup.

Now, several days later, the top of the foam is only near the bottom of the collection cup, and no skimate is being collected, with gunk coating the top of the collection plate underside and the bubbles break far below the hole in the collection plate. I know if I adjust the foam level now, within several days (or sometimes hours) it will go into serious overflow mode, as it has repeated this pattern many times. Small increments on the adjustment screw (1/16 turn or less) noticeably change the top foam level.

Right now it is in 8” of water (up to the bottom of the silencer). I tried 7.5” and was no better. I tried 8-1/2” and also had the same problem, plus the silencer would get water in it. I’ve tried cleaning the collection plate cup between adjustments and leaving the gunk there, only draining the cup. Same issue. Anyone have a similar problem keeping it adjusted? Is there a solution to get it to skim consistently without constant adjustment?

Mine sits in about 9" of water and continually produces dark skim. Try raising the water level. I'm pretty sure most in this thread are running in the 9's. The fluctuating water level in the sump will make the skimmer erratic, I'm not following the "box" makes it a constant level even with the pumps off? My level in the sump raises a good 3-4" when the return pump is off

The same day I bought the SSA DC120 on ebay I noticed that Sea Side removed both the DC120 and DC100 from their website. It made me nervous that they may have been having trouble with them so I quickly contacted the ebay seller and cancelled my order. I send SSA an email asking why it was removed, but never heard back.

I have an 8" tall plastic tub sitting inside my sump with the skimmer in this tub. The overflow dumps into the tub, and the water cascades over the edge into the main sump which has a lower water level, keeping the tub water level at a constant height. I actually have the tub raised on some egg crate, and the sump water level never rises above the top of the plastic when I shut the return pump off and the sump fills. It's basically the same as having a baffle system, with the tub serving as the first compartment.
