aquamaxx ConeS CO 1 skimmer review

For those waiting...I would pick up a used skimmer such as eshopps or bubble magnus. Both of those run around 9-10" of water level in the sump. Then sell it for your same cost when you get your aquamaxx. Only thing with reef octopus is most of them run around 5-6" of water so you may need to adjust your sump again.

My co-1 is breaking in right now. No micro bubbles and just starting to get a foam head with a little under 24 hrs of use.

do you have a little skimmate from your old skimmer? Or did you clean it out already? 24 hrs is the perfect time to seed it with a few drops of skimmate down the neck. It will cut the break in time considerably (not that the CO1 takes long at all). I find that while the foam head develops on new skimmers for the first 24 to 72 hours, the uniformity of the bubbles at the air water line in the body are still uneven. For me, seeding it after the first 24-48 hours helps stabilizes the rise of bubbles at the line and minimal tweaking is needed after that.

only 2 to 4 drops should be needed

If anyone wants to sell me their CO-1 I will pay you $25 more than what you bought it for, or if anyone can find me one I will paypal them $25.

Im debating to bite the bullet and sell my ATB 840 V2 and replace it with a CO3 on my 180g dt, 75g sump, 40g breeder fuge.

Why can't they make this easy :x

I just ordered the co-3 from MD yesterday and it has an ETA of 3-6 months.. Ouch. Good thing i have a skimmer in place already, but that is quite the wait. Hopefully it's an under promise and over deliver tactic from MD.

--updated, MD posted here on RC, it's more like 3-6 weeks. Much much better....--

So I am in the process of selling my ATB 840 V2 and am going to need to replace it as my system has grown.

System: 180g display, 75g sump (1/2 full), 40g fuge - will be heavily stocked.

I am currently looking at these 3 skimmers:

1. Aquamaxx ConeS CO3 - $409.99
2. SKIMZ SM 201 Monzter E-Serie $449.99
3. SKIMZ SK 201 Kone E-Serie $419.95

Any recommendations are appreciated!

Sorry for the late reply

the CO3 would fit nicely

The skimz SM series is a better design IMO than the SK (more reaction chamber). Only thing with those is the Eden pumps. I blew through 2 of them in less than 2 years on my Warner Marine. Some have no issues but they are not on my hot list.

Your 840 v2 is a little undersized IMO, especially if your running high stocking levels. It pulls around 700-800lph and you would want 1000+. I had a 840 V1 with the super crappy psk2500 back in 2009(nice design/crappy pump).

If you decide against the CO 3 then look at the life reef, reef dynamics 280E (w-eheims, not ecoplus) or the JNS SK3. The reef dynamics is probably insanely overpriced but they are rated accurately and Jeff has great support.

Also may want to check out the Avast kits

Good luck in your quest

Tivo

The CO3 is basically the same skimmer as the ATB 840 v2 is my understanding except for the pump & additional cone shooter things inside.

I think I'm going to use my ATB 840 v2 and see how it works, if it doesn't perform well then I'm going to get the Avast CS3 Cone and run it in recirculating mode.

Thanks for your help!

decisions, decisions!

The CO 3 is pretty different in that it has the hybrid Cone transition and is not a straight Cone like the 840. It also pulls more air and as you mention it has the cone diffusers on the BB plate. I think it's a solid choice to give your 840 a shot though because they are the OG of quality skimmers.

Happy reefing

Since I'm coming from a downdraft style, there were several terms used that I wasn't familiar with. Here is a diagram I made up for me, thought I'd share here. Hope it helps and pls let me know if I'm off on anything.

Trying to decide between a co-1 and co-2 for a 90G+sump. Would the co-2 be overkill? I like fish and keep sps :). --Lars

I'm still waiting and hoping for a CO-1 to become available sooner than later. It is the only skimmer I can find that interests me that can fit in my skimmer area. Anyone have any suggestions for something for a 65g system with a 7" x 9.5" footprint? I am getting impatient.
