Hello. I have the q2 skimmer. Not sure if the pump has gone bad. It has been running for about 3 months. I read that a cleaning is needed at about 3 months, but I cannot even figure out how to get it apart. I still do not think it is dirty enough to stop running at this point.

Skimmer pumps should be thoroughly cleaned every 3-4 months. Depending on how clean or how dirty the aquarium/sump is, it can be as short as a month and as long as 6-8 months. If there are debris/sand/small snails or small starfish in the sump, you would definitely want the check the skimmer pump even more regularly. A snail getting in to the skimmer can damage or burn out the pump quickly. Algae or calcium build up can also cause the skimmer to decrease its performance and if left uncleaned can lead to pump failure.

To remove the pump, simply follow the installation instructions in reverse.

Once the pump is out, you can twist off the dark-gray locking ring at the bottom of the pump, pull out the black acrylic impeller cover, then remove the needlewheel impeller. Thoroughly clean all the parts: we recommend soaking the components in a 50/50 mix of vinegar and water for 2 hours then cleaning with a brush. When you re-install the parts, make sure the impeller bushing are properly seated. This is also a good time to check the venturi to make sure there is not calcium or salt creep build up that may be restricting air flow.

We recommend cleaning all the pumps in your aquarium regularly to ensure proper operation.

There was buildup on the impeller. Cleaned it off & good as new. Thanks.
