Where should I have the bubbles breaking? It's broken in and I have them low in the neck. Marine depot says it should be below where the neck joins the body, other places say 3" from where it breaks over to fill the cup.

It changes relative to the flow through your sump but generally you want it to be just beneath where the kneck connects to the body. Pretty much what MD said was correct. The other guys are getting a wetter foam and if that's what you want then you raise the level.

Just keep an eye on it and when it starts to raise a foam into the cup look for how dry it is when it overflows into the cup. If you want it dry then your level will be lower than if you want it wet.

Initially, have it low where the cup meets the neck. Then adjust accordingly whether you want wet or dry skimmate. I run mine high to skim wet.

I have a 300 but basically the same just bigger. I run mine right were the neck connects to the body. Just keep a constant water lvl and your good to go.

Right were the clear meets the black were you tighten the cup is were I set mine.

I run mine dry, if you want a wetter skim adjust it up higher as needed.

what is the benefit of dry vs wet? If I've read the countless threads on it, wet pulls out more water, but also more nutrients. Dry pulls out larger particles and has less of an impact on salinity (though I don't see how the amount of water collected would impact salinity that much).

If I have understood, we try to strive for a mix of dry/wet, which would put the break line...about at the bottom of the lettering.

Essentially, if my nitrates are manageable, say, 20-30ppm (no corals or even fish at this point, just inverts), not only is there nothing to skim, but does it matter where I have the bubbles breaking at this point? All I'm really skimming out would be nitrates.

(though I don't see how the amount of water collected would impact salinity that much).

Your pulling saltwater out and if your adding ro/di to replace your loss salinity is bound to lower. Skimmers don't leave the salt behind while you skim wet, it takes it all.

From what I understand is you skim wetter if you have a huge bio-load or if lets say an anemone gets sucked into your power-head, along with water changes you skim wet to remove the toxins released. If I'm wrong someone please correct me.

I skim wet, and use fresh sw as my top off. My salinity never changes. I empty my RO waste container every week.

How loud is that skimmer if I can ask? Not only the pump or the air but also any sounds of waterfall? Thinking about it for my 100g fowlr that I am setting up.
Thank you fir any info.

It's a pretty quiet skimmer. No waterfall as the discharge is beneath the surface.

I know this is an older thread, but if OP checks in I just want to say that Aquamaxx themselves says to set the level at where the neck meets the body. This was also something I wondered when I first got it, so I emailed Aquamaxx to ask. I usually now just set it anywhere in the neck area and it's good to go.
