AquaMedic Titan 1500 chiller

I just read the instructions for installing this chiller and it says to use a 230V circuit.

I did install a separate circuit in anticipation of adding a chiller but it is a regular 20 amp circuit which I believe is 120V.

Can this chiller use a regular circuit, or does it really need a heavy duty circuit like a stove, oven or electric dryer would need which are usually 240V?

thanks.

condricthys Is yours the Titan 1500 as well or a smaller one? Also, are you using the builtin temperature controller, or an X10 module with an Aquacontroller?

I had planned on using the Aquacontroller but didn't realize the X10 modules have a max of 1/3 hp motor. I am still looking for a heavy duty module that can handle it.

Hi,

Your chiller should be 110v. that is the only models we carry with AquaMedic. It most likely is just the wrong set of instructions. If the chiller has a standard plug on it, it is 110v. If it is 220v, it will have one of the large stove type plugs. So if it does have this, please contact us and we'll make sure the chiller gets exchanged.

thanks

You can get heavy-duty 110 modules that will handle up to 20 amps. This X10 wall outlet, for example, can handle up to 20 amps and is designed to run air conditioners and other appliances. I also found a heavy-duty plug-in module on the web once, but can't find it right now.

Thanks for getting back to me. I was starting to panic. First I discovered I couldn't use the Aquacontroller with the standard modules to control the temperature (max of 1/3 hp and this chiller is 1/2 hp), and then I read the directions about 230V.

I'll check the plug when I get home from work. It's still in the box for now.

Looks pretty, but it's not hooked up yet. Actually, the tank won't be delivered until 8/5. Stay tuned. I'll be starting a thread on my progress in setting it up in a few weeks.

I purchased one of the chillers (Titan 1500) from PA, and love it! I have it hooked up to my Aquacontroller II via an appliance x -10 and everything works fine...I have it holding the temp on 300 gal system to between 80.0 and 80.5 degrees. Runs extremely quiet, and kicks on every hour or so during the heat of the day...runs for 15 minutes, cools the tanks, then shuts back down. Geat investment!!!!!!!!!!

HTH,
Craig

I love my chiller. When I installed it only took 15 minutes to cool down my 110 gal tank from 85 to 79. Only problem I had was trying to match the heater temp and the chiller so they both wont go on at the same time.

Good to hear this unit is working well for you since you live in my neck of the woods.

Have you had any trouble using a normal X-10 controller on it with the Aquacontroller? Since it is a 1/2 hp and the X10 modules say they are good for a max of 1/3 hp, I was just worried. I contacted Neptune Systems and they said to use one of the wall units rather than the normal modules.

My tank just got delivered yesterday, so I will start the long install and set up process this weekend. Can't wait.

Hi Mickey:

I saw on the x-10 paperwork that it was rated for 1/3 hp and the Aquamedic is 1/2 hp, but also saw the controller was rated for 400watts and the chiller is 375watts. I am not an electrical engineer and know motors can have a pretty severe start up draws, but I thought I would give it a try. I am happy to say I have not had one bit of trouble with the controller or the chiller.

Great news on your tank delivery...what size tank are you setting up? I think half the enjoyment in this hobby is setting up the systems! Best of luck with your new set up!

Seanso:

Please try to remember to let me know if you have any problems. I doubt mine will be set up before September, and by then the chiller might not run too much. I may go ahead and try it with a regular module as you are rather than installing the additional outlet.

The new tank is 72" long x 30" wide x 24" high. I will be starting a thread on the construction so stay tuned.

Mickey:

Will do...
Did you have the tank custom made? I am looking to have one made the same size as yours (maybe 27" tall), and would like to utilize starfire glass. LMK

Thanks,
Craig

Craig:

Yes it was custom made. Clear glass (aka Starfire) on the front and one side. Made by Aquariums for You in Long Branch, NJ. They have a website at www.aquariumsforyou.com but it doesn't really give you much information. Give them a call and ask for Chris Walker. He was very helpful.

Not as inexpensive as using InterAmerican (forgot their new name) but I felt better buying more local.

I did see their website a couple of months ago....what did you do for overflows...got any pics?

The tank sits very close to a corner, with a raised hearth fireplace about 4 inches from the left side, and the front wall of the house about 6-7 inches from the right side. So, the right rear of the tank is totally unaccessible. The left rear I can sort of get to by standing on the hearth.

Anyway, the overflow for the drains to the sump and closed loop and the return from the sump is along the back wall starting in that right rear corner. It extends about 28" across the back so it doesn't quite reach the middle. The left edge of the overflow is a 45 degree angle rather than a more common 90 degrees. Also on the right side, just in front of the backwall overflow is another one but much smaller, only 6 inches or so. It contains a drain and return for a closed loop that I plan to use for a chiller. It will be a "dry" box and the water is being pulled through a bulkhead through the wall.

I have a thread started "Dream Tank" but haven't posted to it since I got the new tank. Once I get the time to actually get started and then find additional time to take pictures and write the posts, I will be updating it throughout the process.

If you are going to MACNA, I hope to bring pictures, so look for me.
