Just some clarification from some employees I spoke with and some other local folks in the know. In court this is called hearsay so don't beleive a word of it!
The Columbus and Cleveland stores are/were independentaly owned. The brand name, Aquarium Adventure, is owned and licensed by Petland. They in fact knew they were going out of business in Cleveland as early as this summer, when the landlord allowed them an extension on their lease to finish selling out their inventory, with the understanding that the doors would be closed no later than Jan 1, 2009. The official store policy was to deny they were closing their doors until the last minute, even when it was painfully obvious the store was being liquidated. The employees seemed like they had been read the riot act to perpetuate this obvious falsehood. This was even true for people I had developed some rapport with over time.
The Columbus store is not closed, and YMMV, but you can convert your club membership from the Cleveland store into a membership at the Columbus store, if you ever travel that way. The Columbus store is still pricey, but the selection, quality of goods, service, and overall presentation of the store is much higher than Aquarium Adventure Cleveland.
