Starting on page T1 of the St. Louis Post there is an article that features 10 of the US's public aquariums. I thought it was a pretty cool article and thought I'd let you guys know it was there :)

I read it and the whole time I was reading it, I kept on thinking why doesn't a city like St. Louis have a really well done Aquarium?

The zoo is world class, why not an aquarium?

Money to build it? Too expensive? Can't recoup investment? Well that article was a perfect example of how that thinking is not correct.

Shedd in Chicago has almost 2 milliion visitors a year. The National Aquarium in Maryland is one of that states most visited attractions.

Bring in tourists, fill the hotels, casinos. More visitors for the zoo, museums, etc. It would be a benefit for everyone. The thing we have in the city museum is sad.

It I love to see a good aquarium here. Be nice if the zoo tried to work it out. They have done a great job there and the Living world portion of the zoo is not bad as far a the displays go. Better than that other place in town that has fish tanks......

Leonard Sonnenschein has been working towards that goal for over 20 years now. He's the one doing the rating in the above mentioned article. For years he ran the St. Louis Children's Aquarium and now operates the World Aquarium at the City Museum. Not a bad place and the current home of 6 of our old sharks. Problem is funding, corporate or city, nobody want's to step to the plate. Everyone see's how these new aquariums are being built and making money, and they think it's a great idea but won't write the check. Remember the old arena was one time planned to house an aquarium and I think there are STILL plans for a downtown casino aquarium. Unless the "movers and shakers" in StL get behind this, I think we are SOL!

Large corp. are to busy building motes for casino boats so that people can lose everything they have. They don't want to do anything to benefit the public unless it puts large amounts of money in their pockets.JMO.

THe point is by using that article as a guide, it illustrated that the big classy aquariums bring ALOT of visitors. More visitors for the casinos too, businesses, etc.

And I am sorry, I have been to the World Aquarium in the City Museum twice. Might have been bad days, but I found it somewhat below par, even for its size. Dirty water conditions, fish looking distressed, etc.

St. Louis could benefit no doubt about it.
