Aquascape!!!!!!!!!!!!

Yes, another aquascaping thread, looked through a ton of old threads and didn't find the exact answers I was looking for...

Now I am going to be using acrylic rods through holes drilled in the rock.. I'm wondering what type of base support to use so they don't fall over?

I've searched and seen from eggcrate to cubic foot tile slabs.. I would just like something very clean and something like a tile slab would have alot of bad build up underneath it in the long run I'd imagine..and eggcrate would be sorta flimsy I'd say...

Let's see some pictures.. and some advice on where to get the acrylic rods in socal and what to use as a base support to wedge the rods into first... :strooper: :strooper: :strooper:

will they be buried under sand or bare bottom?

mine are under the sand and i used 3/8" plastic rods from my local plastic shop. i put them in concrete blocks with cement and let them cure for a few weeks in my pond.

Do they sell acrylic rods at home depot?

I've looked at the Home Depot in Santa Barbara and they don't have acrylic rods maybe a little different in Lompoc.

When I first used PVC as a "spine", I used the heaviest rocks in the group, while I stacked the lighter ones on top..

As I progressed, I favored flat shelves on top of heavy base rocks.. still using the PVC as a spine.

My trick for hiding PVC is I use small rubbles and cement them in between the shelf and the base rock:

Most people have had good results with flat acrylic pieces with acrylic rods glued on it using weld-on. IMO this is not ideal for barebottom systems as the flat acrylic pane will TRAP detritus.. this is a no-no in barebottom systems, so I use shelf rocks for support instead of acrylic pane, as it still allow water movement below it unlike an acrylic pane, therefore eliminating dead spots. This is my barebottom display using PVC pipes on shelf rocks:

hope that gave you some insight

I know there has to be someone who has left over rods that are 3/8'' or thicker from aqua scaping in the past.. I will buy them from you!!!

I need maybe 6-8' .. let me knowwwwwwwwwwwww

I am in buena park area

I used 3/8" acrylic rods glued into 5" diameter 1/2" thick acrylic discs (just glue several thinner discs together to make them 1/2" thick...wayyyy cheaper). Everything you need can be found for cheap at USplastics.com, except the glue (weldon 16) flammable, so shipping sucks. Buy it locally. hth

why do you want acrylic rods (specifically)? PVC is just as good. Are you scared that some worm could hide inside? :D

3/8" rod is nice and small = small holes required. Acrylic is easy to glue. But people have used other plastics. I wouldn't use anything hollow. JMO.

you can find those acrylic rods at Paragon Plastics in Santa Ana on East McFadden Street.

Use google to find their address.

Good luck.

xtm, nice aquascape, I like.

hey XTM i have a question...that large white PVC pipe in the rear.... is that your OVERFLOW heading back to the sump?!

In my experience, it's hard NOT to find a plastics dealer here in SoCal... Here in West LA, I have two within a mile of my house--Plastic Mart, and Solter Plastics. Both have rods of all sizes, and can easily mount them onto an acrylic base, or sell you the pieces and the chemical welder to do so yourself...

I'm going to one of them in the next few days to order a custom 4" tall stand for my skimmer to sit higher in my sump....

which one are you useing to build your sump stand?

i live nearby them also and got my rods at plastic mart in santa monica. if you are willing to drive you can get what you want there. i just bought some 3/8" there last week.
