Aquascaping Suggestions

Hi,

You can see how my 20G is setup in my avatar. I set it up that way because when I received my LR (I ordered 30lb of Lalo from Liveaquaria), it came with few small pieces and one huge piece. I chose not to break apart the large piece and put it in the tank as you can see. Now I am wondering whether or not I should break up the big piece and redo the rock formation. What are your thoughts? Any pros or cons of my current setup, one large rock vs. many smaller pieces? Thanks!

IMO, leave it as is... It is a beautiful rock! Congrats!

Using drill and plastic rods (from clothing hangers) or underwater epoxy you could construct an overpass from smaller peices so fish has a hiding place if needed.

I agree with TekCat. I would leave the one piece as is. I kind of like the look of one big rock. I would take the smaller ones though and make another island or some structure with them rather than scatter them around.

One more vote for keeping it. I'm biased, though, as I just sought and purchased a large 20+ lb rock for my tank.

Mind sharing pictures of said structures? Sounds fascinating.

(I have underwater epoxy, but loath the idea of permanently affixing two or more rocks.)

... I know that the search function doesn't work most of the times, however if you're lucky you could find a number of aquascaping (with pictures) threads at RC.

Thanks, TekCat. I use Google to search RC considering I've never seen the RC search function actually work. I'll have to get my google-fu on after class. Mainly, I wanted to see the drill and plastic rod method and results. Cheers.

What are you planning on putting in it? Sometimes one rock can cause problems versus a few islands or seperate structures. It does look nice now, though.

I have a 20H and I too purchased Lalo rock. I HAD to break one of the peices because it wouldn't even fit into the tank!! I have not yet tried to aquascape with it because they are curing right now but we will see!

the big rock looks really nice. If you could get your hands on some nice tonga branch pieces, you could lean them against it to make bridge structures for things like zoos and gsp to grow on.

The problems I forsee is corals being able to take over the rock and fight with one another. When there are seperate rocks and islands, you can easily seperate them if any problems occur. Again it depends on what corals are being kept, but zoas, xenia, gsp, etc., will all grow on a rock quickly and come in contact with one another, which may result in problems.
