Aquaworld

If you don't like a store then by all means do not shop there. Everyone is welcome to their opinions about where they like and do not like to shop. If I or anyone else wants an alligator they can very easily go buy one online. I do think that I did see one at Aquaworld recently, but if someone really wants one they will get it one way or another. The same goes for other "exotic" pets. It is not on us to make laws regarding the keeping of such animals. I agree that it is a shame when people impulse buy such creatures. There are people who buy those animals and keep them in proper set ups and who are we to judge what someone else wants to do. I knew a guy in the south hills who had an alligator that he had at that point for 40 years. The entire basement of his house was the habitat for his gator. I haven't been in touch with the guy in years, but I imagine that he probably still has the alligator.

I'm sure most of us hate mistreatment of animals in any manner.

Does this particular store keep their animals any differently than any other local stores? I don't really see it. I may be wrong, but I can't think of anything that really jumps out at me.

They always treat me well and they treat the club well. They offer club members a discount and donate to our raffle and frag workshop whenever we ask. The wife and I were just there this evening. I bought a frag of a chalice out of his display tank and the wife bought a rock flower anemone. I go there mostly for coral and they always have a decent selection and the tanks look good as do the coral.

Some people like some stores and hate others and that list usually changes depending on the person. I have store that I prefer to shop at so I do and others I don't. If you don't like a store then don't shop there. Everyone is welcome to their opinions, but if you want to trash talk make your own thread.

You are right, I did see a alligator there about 2 months ago. I asked them where they had gotten it since it was a larger. The guy said that they had adopted it because someone couldn't afford to buy a larger habitat for it. He also said they were actively trying to find it a good home.

All good points. I will admit it had been some time now that I think about it since I had been there. Last I was there though I was disappointed due to several aquariums where fish were so large in a tight space they couldn't turn around. That aside. I do respect those points. It may have been a bit unfair of me to judge as I had not been there for a while. I will say I continue to believe that as hobbyists we should aim for mostly seeking frags from tank raised colonies as I do not support taking them from nature any longer... There are colonies being fragged today that are from colonies raised a decade or more ago in some cases. So there are plenty of sources. I just believe the more we reduce the current trend of taking animals from nature, the more we can get ahead and help stop damaging the current ecosystems any more than we already have.

Hi Ted! I had been away for some time... over the last year I had been working for a company where I managed 70k + users globally in a cloud database... Was working about 18 hour days almost 7 days a week for about 8 months. Just finally managed to get out and now work near the airport. Just going to hover and admire other peoples tanks mostly. Also I appologize for de-railing the thread.... Not my intent.

Honestly, aquaworld is a very nice store. They are in my opinion one of the best if not the best exotic pet stores around. In regards to selling gators, I would recommend you not go to a reptile expo that are frequent in the area. You would be appalled then of the exotic reptiles that get sold there. Aquaworld is a great store, with great people who work there.

Nick, I remember your feelings of Aquaworld from a past thread. If you don't like a store that's fine and I don't have a problem with you saying so, but if your post is an attempt to start something, you should know I won't put up with it. I searched the web and there is nothing about arowanas being illegal anywhere. If you want to say something like that, look for proof to post with it please.

Nonononononononononononono! I wasn't trying to start something! I was honestly just curious. I read a book called The Dragon Behind the Glass (it was about the Asian Arrowana cartel- it's a thing) and apparently they're protected in the US because they're endangered in the wild, despite the fact that arrowanas are the most largely captive-bred fish in the world. So sorry for the confusion!

Ive never understood why people dont like aquaworld but love elmers

Every time i go in elmers they try to sell me some crap i dont need and its overpriced and the older staff is very rude and i get the vibe they dont care

In aquaworld he can usually get whatever i want at a fair price and he has personally worked with me on a lot of stuff

In fact i just went into elmers the other day after not using them for over 2 years. i got a quote on a tank build. They "add on" all the most expensive stuff or the products where they get the biggest profit margin like reef crystals instead of instant ocean. Sure its only 10 dollars difference but i notice them trying to jip me, they think im an idiot and dont know the difference. They also tried pushing a canister filter on me for 10 minutes after i repeatedly told them im using a skimmer and they said i should use both because they do.

I mean look, if i i was a newbie okay feel free to tell me how to run my tank but ive kept fish since i was 12. if it was a nano tank i understand the carelessness but im about to drop well over 5 grand into a large build im starting, and the owner at the counter in elmers seemed like she didnt even care! lol

Ill never buy anything from that store again i just go in there to see what they have now and then, and every time i do i regret even going

ONCE AGAIN.

Not pointing the finger at any one person. This is NOT the place to complain about stores.

Some people hate Elmers and love aqua world. Some people hate Aquaworld and love Elmers. Some people will only buy fish from Wet Pets. Some people will only buy coral from The Reef Gallery. Some people love Saltwater Sanctuary.

If you notice the name of this forum it is Pittsburgh Marine Aquarium Society. All of those stores offer the club members a discount and they all support the club in other ways. We should go thank the stores for their support. All stores have the up sides and down sides.

If you guys want to discuss or give your personal feeling on stores or give reviews you can, just not by highjacking someone elses thread. I am not one to censor peoples posts by any means, but lets move that to a local store review thread, hell I'll personally go start one.

I went to Elmer's today. Had a nice talk with Karen and got some snails for my getto tank. 10 for 15 bucks for turbos and nerites.

This thread is about aqua world. I talked about aqua world and elmers. Idc if you're the president of some club. And idc that you support anyone who supports your club.

I judge a store on how they deal with me not which club they support. If you don't like my post don't read it?

In fact my posts are to help other local reefers. Isn't that what your club is supposed to do? I have an honest review and I'm not bought and paid for by anyone

This forum is the clubs forum. This isn't a SW PA forum this sub-forum is the frickin clubs forum, the club which I run atm. If you want to go bash a store by all means go ahead. As I said I am not real big on censorship. Free country say whatever you want. I even went and made a thread specifically for anyone who wants to go bash a store.

What I asked nicely was that we not high jack Jesse's thread and stay on the original topic which was his little temp set-up and the frags that he picked up.

My apologies for being very rude in my previous posts. I'm not happy with elmers but I went a little too far with my comments.

I had a family member pass away recently and I'm going through a lot. anyway I just want to say sorry and good luck with your club

No worries man. I greatly appreciate your maturity on the apology it takes a big man to admit when he has gone too far and I respect that. I would be kind of ticked if someone spent 10 minutes trying to sell me something that I already told them that I didn't want.

It's a tough job to let people speak their mind, but at the same time not let people overly flame the hand that feeds them.

Personally I shop at Aquaworld and The Reef Gallery mostly because they are close to me, but I do also frequent Elmer's for their used equipment sale and the days the club meets there. I also rarely stop by Saltwater Sanctuary and Wet Pets when I am down at my folks since both of those are down the street from them.

I love aqua world, great selection and prices. Every time I'm there the younger guy helps me and is always nice. I bought a beautiful male blonde Hawaiian Naso from the display and a leopard wrasse. Can't beat the frag tank IMO.

I'm gonna have to check some of those stores out.

I've been to elmers, aquaworld, and slippery rock corals before he closed up.

I also just seen On Craigslist "saltwater shack" out of Altoona which looks cool too

I'm honestly surprised there aren't any saltwater stores in the north hills area. If there is I've never heard of it. If anyone sold saltwater near the Ross park mall I'd go broke bc my gf always wants to go there so it would give me an excuse to go! Ha!

The Reef Gallery is on 19 right after you go through Cranberry.

I wonder if saltwater shack is the place that Fetta and I stopped when we picked up his 180.

The saltwater shack I believe is right across from my sister's apartment... I will have to find out... Is it on 4th ave or something?
