Aqueon Modular ProFlex Sump Filtration

Yea I know what the filter does lol. My pump came with this round cone looking filter. Weird. Doesn't even look like it does anything. Wonder if the aquarium store has the foam filters for my pump. They should. I got 2 turbo snails and 30 hermit crabs last night as well. I got my tank running on those hang on filter pumps for now. They are annoying as heck. Trust me I can't wait till I get my refugium going so I can take those pumps off and throw them. lol

im heading to my lfs in a little bit ill check if they have the filter thing for the pump. does your round cone filter go on the end of the pump? i got a plastic piece that is long that goes on the pump and then the black filter slides over the plastic piece. The HOB filters suck i had one on my old fish only tank it splashes and made salt deposits all over i hated it. sump is so much quieter!

and it is still not able to keep up? Maybe something is blocked where your siphon is cus if i turn my almost closed barely little water comes out of the return. I have my valve almost all the way open now and its able to keep up.

I would say my ball valve is a little over 3/4 closed! Let me add a pic. where I have it now is doing what it's suppose to but it's closed to much to me.

hmm what kind of overflow are you using? Everything in the sump looks good that is about how much i had my valve closed.

how does my water line look in the 3rd chamber with the pump?
Looks like I'll be getting a Mag 7 model. This mag 9.5 seems to be too powerful for a 55gal.
Im useing a Aqueon proflex Hang on Overflow box

I believe that a general rule of thumb for a reef tank is around 10-20 times turnover of the volume of the tank per hour. Some folks think more, some less. So, 55 gallon times 10 = 550, 20 X = 1100 for your pump. so i would think the mag should be fine but if you really have to turn it down then it might be too powerful. i would run it on another thread and see what you get from other people to get more opinions. Your plumbing looks good. Is your drain line 1"? I checked out your aqueon overflow and it says you can do 2200 gph so i would double check everything again because it should be able to keep up with the siphon.

I'm using the hose that the proflex sump came with. It's the grey hose its 2" or bigger. The overflow box comes with a clear hose. Looks like maybe that clear hose they gave me isn't big enough. If I go bigger that might help.

I have 1 1/2 drain pipe down to bulkhead then that grey tube you are talking about strait to the sump. I almost have my dial opened all the way and it's able to keep up just fine.

I'm going to pick up another U tube for the siphon and see if having two hoses will make this thing move more water. If that doesn't work then I guess I'll def have to down size the pump

No not this one. I got the one that is up to 125 gallon. Well 2 U tubes won't work on this small overflow box. One of the one U tube will stop siphoning. But I did get a bigger U tube. So its working a little better. But it looks like i'm needing that smaller pump. I've read a lot of threads on here that a Mag 9.5 will be too powerful. So now i'm trying to figure out if I should get the Mag 7 or the 5. Probably the 7 so I can turn it down with the ball valve if I have to. I'm afraid to get the 5 and it won't be strong enough. but then im thinking what if the 7 model is still to powerful. If you get time and read up on it let me know what you get out of it. Well the real reason to how I got the mag 9.5 was someone at a aquarium store said it would be just fine. I should have read here first and got more info.

here is a mag 7 flowrate with feet of tubing or PVC. maximum: 700 gph 2': 550 gph 5': 425 gph 10': 125 gph 12': shut off
I don't have more than 4 feet of return line from the pump to the top of the tank. So that would put me at around 475gph or more. Then I can slow it down with the ball valve so maybe the 7 model is the ticket.

Setup:120g RR, Aqueon Proflex Model 4 Sump, ecoxotic Stunner LED Strips 8,000°K White/453nm Blue and ecoxotic Panorama LED Module 8,000°K/453nm Blue for refugium, Red Sea C-Skim 1800, ViaAqua Water Pump Model 1800 for skimmer, Mag 18 return, 1 fluval E Series 300w heater, BRS Stage 5 Plus RO/DI, Refractor, Red Sea Pro Sea Salt, Mag-Flip 100 Aquarium Cleaner

The Proflex is very quiet. That is the reason I bought it so I love it. There is a room issue in the third chamber. I am having problems getting a 300watt heater in the sump with the pump and skimmer.

that sounds like it will work great. Going to give it a try?

ya that would have been helpful, looks like the mag 7 would work out fine for you might have to dial it back a little bit. What are you going to do with your mag 9?
