are flame hawkfish compatible with clownfish?

I have a flame hawkfish and two tomato clowns and they never bother each other. I've had them both for over 3 years now. My flame in my favourite fish.
They are excellent additions to pretty much any tank.

I have a mate who keeps a flame with two smaller percula clowns too and he has had no problems with his.
If possible add them to the tank at the same time to minimise terrortorial disputes, but if thats not possible, i would give it a go anyway, i added mine at seperate times and from what i have seen/heard/read they are compatible.

I got my first tank already setup from one of my parents workmate. He had the tank setup for awhile before i got it, so i dont know how long he cycled it or how long he had had some of the fish before i got it. I do know that he added the hawk and clowns at the same time though.

The other 2 tanks i have setup since then have been 'cycled' using live rock, live coral rubble and water from my established tank so that they have been ready almost instantly. It is generally agreeed thought that a tank can take 2-4 months before being ready. There are plenty of cycling posts in this forum and other forums on this site, and if you cant find what you need just post a question yourself. If you ever need any other info of have other questions feel free to private message me or email me, or again just post it. have fun.

I have a pair of Perculas and a Flame Hawk. Been together for a couple years and they've never had problems with each other.

They shouldn't bother each other. Flame hawks are cool, but they will intimidate shrimp, causing the shrimp to usually hide.

As long as the clownfish are large enough to prevent the hawkfish from swallowing them, then they should be ok. Depending upon the species, I would add the clowns first.

Flame Hawkfish & Maroon Clown

Flame Hawkfish & Maroon Clown

I have Flame Hawkfish and a Maroon Clown with an anemone host. They get along fine. If the hawkfish perches too close to the anemone, the clown will swim up to the hawkfish but will not try to nip it. The hawkfish will slowly swim away without a fight.

I have a mated pair of flame hawks and a pair of onyx ocellaris - it is a constant battle. I got the clowns first and added the hawks later. The hawks always swim over in the vicinity of the clowns anemone and perch, then they inevitably go at it. My largest clown has displayed some damage to his fins but no other injuries are evident so far. I keep hoping the agression will eventually subside as I really like all of them.

My flame loves to annoy my female clown, the male couldn't care less, the hawk is definately her nemesis. I swear it just perches near her to provoke a reaction although very rarely is contact made.

My False Perc pair are not fans of my Flame Hawk at all. They couldn't care less about any other fish in my tank, but if my Flame gets too close, they will chase him into hiding. Never been any injury or really bad aggression though. Based on others' responses, sounds like my experience is somewhat unique.

The clowns usually hang around the LTA, while my flame is hopping around from rock to rock. Never bothered each other.

My A. ocellaris female kept trying to kill my Flame Hawk. Fortunately, he was both faster & smarter than she was ( but the crash got him, RIP).
I think they look too much like another species of Clown.

I have a flame hawk that has shared a 44 gal tank with a pair of occy clowns for over 6 years and they pay no attention to each other as the clowns just hang out in their anemone and hawk hops and perches around the tank. He is my favorite fish - so much personality. I can't imagine having a tank without one. Only down side is not being able to have shrimp in the tank.

Ive had my flame and a pair of oc's for over a year,no problem, like most people say, they dont really bother each other at all.Be cautious of shrimp,I have 3 larger peppermints, all fine, but i decided to add another 3 shrimp,a little smaller as this was all the lfs had. As soon as the first shrimp was added from the net,the flame...aka "hawkeye' came out of nowhere and gulped the shrimp in 1 bite.So shrimp that are larger are ok,avoid small shrimp with the flame.Agree, this guys got lots of personality.

Re: are flame hawkfish compatible with clownfish?

I have a Flame Hawk with 2 clowns. And the Flame loves to mess with Clowns. The Clowns chase and then go back to their Nem. After 3 or 3 of these, the Flame is off to his next adventure.
