anybody have any issues with hippo tangs chewing on things that they shouldnt? everything i read says they are herbivores, but i swear that i read something years ago that said they can munch on corals and/or clams. thanks. i guess i am asking if they are typically considered reef safe?

Howdy my friend. While any fish can get a bug up their *** Hippo's are reefsafe. It will do a awesomne job if you have algae. If you don't make sure to feed it Nori. I just buy it at the kings sooper same stuff they use to make sushi with.

Never had issues with one I had in Montana. I was given one here because it was nipping clams in his owner's tank. In my tank he was a good citizen but I didn't have any clams.

Keith, over the course of years of being in this hobby, I have seen hippos nip at all sorts of corals, as well as clams. This goes for just about every tang species at some point in time. I guess its just the fish's preference. you really wont know until you try it or purchase from an LFS that will disclose any odd behavior to you!
Cheers~!
