Are my zoas dead?

Rhinecanthus

In Memoriam
Bought these last week from a west coast reefer.

They were sent to me on the east coast OVERNIGHT.

Problem (or what I think the problem is) is that the shipper put a heat pack in with them but didnt even put a piece of paper between teh 40hr heat pack and the bags with the zoas.

When I got them the water was very warm and the water they were in was pretty strong smelling. Almost smelled like live rock with a lot od die off...I feared the worst.

I put them in the tank hoping they would bounce back.

Here are some pics...any thoughts? (pics with and without flash)

Doesnt look good for them.

I dont want to say anything about the seller at this point. Hopefully he will make good on this as he realizes it was his mistake with the heat pack.

Well I am sorry but they don't look good. I had some pretty unusuals sent to me and they stank so bad that I couldnt hardly put them in the tank. They all died. Same persone recent, with the same results. The bad smell is not a good sign at all...

Sorry.

As for someone PMing me regarding this seller.

I do not believe he is a bad seller at all. Very professional guy. Things like this sometimes happen when ordering through the mail and he intends to compensate me for this matter.

Again, thats why I wont say who it is.

So please, if you are PMing me because you are worried about "your order", please stop. This was an accident and nothing more and I highly suspect it was a one-time thing.

Seller and I are still working this out.

Thanks

For decay, I like to do 10 drops of Lugols per liter of saltwater for 15-20 minutes, with periodic turkey basting. Then put the zoa back and blast the heck out of it with a powerhead. I've had some come back after looking/smelling pretty bad.

I did have a colony with decay that I lost, but that was with fresh water dip. The fw dip seems to be more stressful than the sw.

looks like i had the same problem.. i recieved 3 zoanthid frags last weekend with fedex next day shipping.. heat pack was still warm.. double bagged the zoas, but water was still somehow leaking.. heatpack was right on top of the zoas like yours were.. water stunk bad.. one of the frags was unmounted.. threw 'em in.. not a single polyp has opened still. :sad1:

Theyre gone. They began to actually fall apart...massive necrosis.

I tossed them earlier today.

The seller is going to make good on my order and resent frags I ordered plus a few extras free of charge.

This was just an unfortunate accident...it happens, even to the best of us.

Thumbs up for the seller being true to his word and an honorable person.

heat packs

heat packs

Heat packs avg temps are above 100 deg.

I lost 2 PPE polyps the same way - seller used a very small box with the heat pack directly on top of the bagged coral. There was only about 1 cup of water and it's temp was 90+ when received. They detached from the LR and died in 2 days. Seller refunded my money.

IMO, the box with the coral and heat pack should be big enough to separate them. I usually tape my heat packs to the side of the box. Also, I put my corals double-bagged into a thermos which goes into the box on the opposite side of the heat pack. Haven't lost any shipments to date......
