are these true percs, or ocellaris?

What makes you say that phender? Is it the black lines alone?

I thought that wasn't always a good indicator...

The black lines help, but it wasn't the main thing. I have seen adult percs from the Solomon Islands that have almost no black around there stripes at all.

Their were 3 other things.
One of the pics shows a clear yellow/orange iris. Sometimes a perc eye can be cloudy like an ocellaris under certain lighting, but I have never seen an ocellaris with the clear orange iris of a perc.

That shade of yellowish orange is a perc color, you won't see it in ocellaris.

Like illcssd said, after seeing thousand and raising a few, there is a body/head shape difference that is very subtle.

Although it wasn't much of a factor, a price of $40 each is pretty steep for ocellaris. Hey, its pretty steep for percs too.

Big Al's isn't just a small LFS they are a corporate company that is turning into a chain. We have one down here in South FLA with plans for two more. I also order 90% of my electronics from bigalsonline.com. I don't know about yours, but I think your Big Al's is the original.

I can't believe your Big Al's has problems with the fish that come out of there. I have never heard things like that from the one we have down here. I find it hard to believe they are growing into an international powerhouse with those kinds of problems in their "homeland". They have practically squashed all of the local competition down here, because their prices are so good, and their tanks are always crystal clear. Their staff is both plentiful and knowledgful.

For what my 2c is worth, I agree that the body/head shape says A. Percula.

Ovuel, you've never visited Vancouver B.C then, if you believe Bigals has the best price here. Bigals is perhaps the last store i'd go to for electronics. Also, only 1 lady at the store has some basic knowledge on marine tanks, other staffs are just part time workers who sell fish covered in ich to customers. And the only reason why i purchased my clowns there is because i have been seeking for true percs for a long time, and they are really hard to come by (i dont know why) here in b.c.
Anyways, u believe the clowns i purchased are true percs (and do i and the majority of the replies i got on this thread), but Bigals had them labelled as "Tank Raised Ocellaris".

I see, Phil...I guess I've gotta get some experience in all of this stuff before I'll be able to spot the differences so easily.

k, heres a clearer picture of the female clown
i am not too good with the whole countin the dorsal fin stuff
so can u guys count it (whoever is good at it)
this way, i can ensure myself if they are percs or ocellaris!
this will be my last post for the thread
thanks for id-ing them guys!

Perculas. I can almost tell that without looking twice. I love percula, I'm not a fan of ocellaris...yeah, yeah, they look the same. But to me they do not at all! Once in a while one can look like both, but for the most part their are just too many differences.

Give me an onyx, a picasso, or even a regular perc over a B&W, a snowflake, or a regular oc any day!! I really like the tailspots on your new clowns. Congrats on a beautiful pair.

Yep...9 spines. Percula for sure! Not that everyone else wasn't positive beforehand...lol.

Again, gorgeous pair!
