Are we lazy or what ?

If you are like me and don't live on this site the abrevations drive me nuts. I know a few like the simple ones LFS LOL but when you can't understand the majority like me kinda takes away from the purpose of this site Go ahead flame me I can take it. But this is realy a problem for many even though they won't admit it .

that is part of the reason there is a sticky thread at the top of the page, and also at the home page there is a list of acronyms we use.

yes we are lazy, it is human nature, but just like any specialized field acronyms can and do become commonplace.. its part of the learning curve :)

don't worry you will start to pick up on them in time.

You have lazy..then you have people who just take too darn long to type. :) I have a hard enough time TEACHING MY FATHER THAT TYPING IN ALL CAPS IS YELLING. But it already takes him 2 minutes to type a sentence...capitalizing the first word of every sentence would just take that much longer. :) IMing..oh sorry...Instant messaging communication is painful with my father!

But trust me...even if you don't consider yourself lazy, typing "my local fish store" will be replaced with "my LFS" the very next time you go to use it. :) It's not being lazy, it's being efficient! ...ok...lazily efficient, but efficient sounds better.

Hell went to link it's a darned dictionary the hell with that post in laymens words or to heck with it not that concerned with it .

OMG, INBD. IMHO, you should just LOL, get in your car, go to the LFS, get some SPS and maybe even a GSM for that BTA.

I hear you, man. I try to just stick with the really common abbreviations, but I'm guilty. It should make a difference when people are responding to a thread started by someone with 5 posts as opposed to someone with 500, though. I've been reading these posts for going on a couple years now, and I still see abbreviations from time to time that stump me. Let's see, not on the list:

PPE - Purple People Eater (Zoanthid)
GSM - Gold Striped Maroon (Clownfish)
WSM - White Striped Maroon (Clownfish)
GFO - Something to do with carbon I think
GFI/GFCI - Ground Fault (Circuit) Isolation (I think)
DFS - Doctors Foster and Smith
LA - Live Aquaria

Oh, and I'm sure each of us has about 50 more, not to include all the instant/text message abbreviations. It reminds me of that cell phone commercial with the mother and the little girl who's talking all in abbreviations.

better yet, if you don't know an abbreviated word, just ask. It's not like it's a secret language that we'll not share :D.

A community defines itself by the language it uses. That's human nature. You can't come into a community and tell them to change the way they communicate.... that's folly. In a good community, there's no harm in asking what someone means when they use jargon from the community's language. Feel free to ask what we mean. Papagimp is exactly right... it's not a secret, and we're more than happy to explain something to you.

We're not lazy... well I am... but as a community we're not. This hobby has a way of filtering out impatient jerks. They certainly don't last long here.

Close

GFO= Granulated Ferric Oxide - Phosphate remover media
GFCI= Ground Fault Circuit Interrupter

See, I'm terrible with acronyms. What's that, 5 out of 7, with partial credit for GFCI? Probably a C-.
