Are you checking your zoos?!

I was just looking in my tank late night to see what is going on, and found this strange pattern on top of a closed up zoanthid. Immediately, I had a feeling it was a zoo spider, or predator.

Here are a few images.

As you can see, this is a small creature. It was on a large polyped zoanthid that was closed up. I removed it with tweezers. Not reef-safe

It stood out like a bright orange starfish when the flashlight hit it. Maybe you can find them that way too.

i have ben seeing my zoos go down hill. i look at my tank every night.
i found a sundials. and i gave them a dip and i found small flat things. i think nudis
they looked more like flat worms

Hmmm. Looks like I'll have out the flashlight and magnifying glass tonight.

Hey, hey.....TO LOOK AT THE ZOOS!!

Yes, it appears to be a Pycnogonid (or sea spider). They usually feed on polyps like a mosquito-sucking juices through a long proboscis. They are really little, as you can see and tend to be quite rare. I have only seen one myself.

Yeah I got these on a bunch of zoos from Tanquilscape.

Luckily I run a dip and keep them in a small tank for a few days b4 putting in my tank. But 2 out of the 4 zoos rocks I got from there had them. I think I pulled off maybe 5 or 6 zoo spiders. Not pretty little guys at all....

On the bright side my wrasse did seem to like them when I test fed one to him.

Mark, how do you know you got all of them? Is there a treatment you can do to rid your tank of this parasite? Any larvae?

Thats some set of peepers you've got there. How you ever saw that is beyond me.

Thanks and good luck on your quest to rid your tank of them.

Guys, one of our LFS has been bringing in millions of zoanthids, and in the process offered our club some fantastic deals. They sold them for $10, $15, $20, $30, $45, and more per frag. Usually it wasn't the color (except for insane blue) that determined the price but rather the size of the frag. More money meant more polyps.

Our club's members bought, bought, and bought some more. At the same time, we discovered the various parasites that comes with this type of coral. Nudibranchs, sundial snails, and sea spiders. I had one given to me to photograph, but it was white, wispy, and tiny. I didn't have much to work with and gave up. When I saw this one last night, I quickly took pictures for y'all.

They aren't that tiny. Remember, it was on the tip of a large polyped zoanthid which when closed is still 1/4" wide. It was rather bright orange when the flashlight hit it. And when I picked up the zoo to get a better angle, it kinda moved quickly or jumped a fraction (I'm not sure because I kinda jumped a fraction in reaction  ). In just a bowl of water, it didn't move all that quickly, but I guess zoos give them better traction.

I've not added anything to this tank other than more zoos from my main reef, the Dendrophyllia from MACNA, and most recently Fang, my clown goby. I have a feeling it has been in there for months. I'll keep watching for more.

Here are the sundial snails and some images of the nudibranchs: http://reefcentral.com/forums/showthread.php?s=&threadid=623318&highlight=sundial+snail

Sure, that is fine with me. I'd like photo credit or a point to my site as the source though.

when i was working down in boca raton, i saw one of those on a reef i was monitoring. they're pretty cool. i had alot of work to do, but i watched him going about his business for a minute or two. who would've guessed that there are spiders that live underwater?!

I had one of those in my sand bed a while back and removed him, nobody could ever give me a straight answer of what it was but I figured chances are its not safe :)

absolutly, wouldn't have it any other way! :)

photographer credit shows up when you click into the pic itself and aren't in an album or thumbnail mode. working on making it show up on thumbnails too.

ty very much! :)
