today when i woke up i went over to my tank and turned on the lights and when i looked up first thing i noticed was the back wall was clear when just the day before it was loaded with algae considering its hard to clean with all the live rock. the next thing i noticed was about 30 or more astral stars all over the back of the tank and same amount spread out on the other 3 walls of the tank....... dont know how i have gotten so many and how the back wall was cleared so fast but all i got to say is WOW

David,

What are astro stars and how do I get them?!?!?!?

David, it's possible that some change(probably water chemistry) in your system triggered what stars you did have to reproduce. When they reproduce they usually disappear onto the bottom of the rocks then split and reappear in 2-3 times the amount you had before. What changes have you made in the last couple of weeks. Would be interesting to know if anyone where to try to culture these guys in the future.

Adictedtoswf those stars are often hitch hikers in LR. I've never seen any store with the exception of one place online, but they are something some RC trade. Might talk David or Liz into swapping some with you. I used to have a lot, but for some reason the numbers I had have declined. I don't think I have as much algae as I used to.

Thanks Jon, I just found out that sunlight could cause algae problems is this correct? My nano tank is next to the window and I have the shade up to get natural sunlight in the tank. But now one rock is completely cover in hair algae. Should I keeps the blinds closed?

Wow... dont tell natural reefs that... thats all they use ;) Natural light doesnt promote algae growth in my opinion... if you have the nutrients for algae growth i think it will grow under any lights. If you get a chance look up anthony calfo's book on coral propogation. He talks about using ONLY sunlight to grow his corals and how his tanks had NO bad algae.
