I used to test for this and that. Not anymore..... I do weekly water changes on both of my tanks with what you say crappy instant ocean. But I do dose two parts to the mixed water. I was adviced to do that by one of the big reefer that is well known. I have tested with my test kits before starting that process and instant ocean have lower calcium and alkaline like what I was told. It works out for me quite well. Just don't over dose cause you will have negative effects on your fish!!!
