Asking for help

I'm Mike's wife (he said I have to put that because I'm gonna be rambling & he doesnt want to take credit for it).

I am requesting help from any of you willing to help. Late last week, my daughter heard on radio station Spirit FM about an 11 year old boy who had been saving for a year for lights for his salt water tank.

He chose to give the money he had saved ($160) to the station for their annual fund raiser. My daughter heard this & wanted to see if we could find some way to get him the lights he was saving for.

I talked with his father & he said the tank measures 42" long, so I was thinking a 36" fixture with 2 - 96 watt PC bulbs so he can keep a few leathers & softies & such.

Does anybody have anything they would be willing to donate or something they want to sell that we could get together & pitch in a few dollars to help this little guy out?

We can get him started with frags & "stuff", but dont have any extra lights.

Any help or ideas are appreciated.
Thanks
Johnnie

I don't live close but, I admire the kid for giving up his money. What is the fund raiser for? I'll be tagging along just to see how he fairs foe his generosity.

i have 2 PC fixtures that i used for freshwater, that are both 36" long.

one is a coralife PC, 36" long but only has 1 bulb, which is 96w (6700k). all it needs is a new bulb.

the other fixture is a perfecto HO, 36" long and has 2 bulbs (T8's). dont remember what bulbs are currently in it right now, but its definitely not bulbs adequate for a reef. but again, all it would take is new bulbs.

neither has any legs...so you would have to lay it down on top of a glass top.

you are welcome to take both off my hands. they are just collecting dust in my closet.

...but shoot, for $160 he could have just bought a MH retro kit online, and still had some money left over to throw a couple of pieces of wood together to hold up the light. he must have been saving up for one of those ridiculously overpriced coralife fixtures.

I have some things I would be willing to donate.. Let me check tonight when I get home and i'll post what I have...

Spirit FM is a non-profit Contemporary Christian radio station in Lynchburg, VA that has 2 fund raisers per year to keep the station on the air.
This was an additional fund raiser they had this year to help build a new building.

After checking through our stuff in storage , I have gotten rid of anything that would fit his tank. Allthough I would definetly donate a few frags for the kid. And I know it is probably not a big help but I have a MH single end Reflector if it helps get him some lights....Let me know...

? does he have a tank up and running or is he just starting. If possible can you find out what he does have so that we can go from there. Sump or not. I think that we all have enough stuff that we all are not using we could help him out. .

His father said he's had the tank set up for 2 years, but not enough light to have corals, etc.

I'll call his father back tomorrow & find out about sump, protein skimmer, etc.

I'll post answers tomorrow.

Thanks
Johnnie

If you all figure out the lighting situation, I will help out with some corals. Try to get him to a meeting so he can check out different tanks to see what he wants to do. Good luck and let me know. Michael R
