ASM G3 issues

Hey gang,

A little baffled by my posessed G3 skimmer. Came home yesterday to a rapidly overflowing skimmer. The collection cup was about 1/2 full and dumped all that skimmate back into the tank when it went crazy. Cleaned it up, did a water change and started it back up. After running about 6 hours it was about 1/2" full. Woke up this morning and it was only about 1" full. Came home from work and it was overflowing again. Any idea what the issue could be? I didn't introduce anything into the tank recently and over 12 hours it skimmed about 1" worth. Then in the next 10 it went crazy. I've got it dialed down again, but I'm worried to leave it.

Suggestions?

Check your muffler, i bet its getting plugged up at times, you get the same situation when you put your finger over the end of the hose. Let me know. Mark

That's got to be it. My Euro starts to clog about every 3 week and the muck starts to get more watery. All I have to do is clean out the air control valve and that takes care of it.

My muffler is above the water level and never gets wet. how could it gunk up pulling air?

I'll check it out though. Wouldn't even think it could get gunky.

So is mine, but it is also a filter and it is in a moisture rich enviorment, so between dust and moisture(vapor) it could be either restricting air flow or shutting it off. Its worth a look atleast

Mine is as well. The gunk is in the collection cup. Dust and such from fans combine with the moisture under the tank. The sucking action in the muffler sucks this in. It then dries the dust and start to limit the flow causing the extra flow into the collection cup. I just pull off the valve and either blow thru it backward or run hot water thru it.

sorry to hyjack the thread but do you think that this along with my bubble problem in my sump could be the cause of the same thing happening with my precision marine skimmer, the pump for it is sitting right in the supply from the tank and i have bubbles EVERYWHERE in the sump

Hey I have a G3 skimmer that came used with my 240gal. tank. It worked fine until I got it - at which point it filled the collection cup with water in about 5min. - EVEN WITH IT ADJUSTED TO THE LOWEST POSITION. It sat for a few months in the sump and I just tried it again the other night and it now works. I think it has a mind of its own. I did notice that it doesn't make the slurping noise that it did before. Maybe the airline was clogged.

Hi MJ,

I have the ASM G3 and have had that same problem. I think mine is related to the level of the sump water. When my sump level increases it drives the water inside the skimmer higher and it overflows. I am going to put a baffle in my sump so that the water level around the G3 always stays constant.

Thanks all. I took the muffler off and readjusted the bubble level. The skimmer is in a baffled area, so I don't think that' the issue. No issues this morning. Fingers crossed for this afternoon.

Matty -- are the bubbles coming from your overflow or from your skimmer?

how far does the water go up into the skimmer and how much is foam? not that this has anything to pretain to your question, i know someone who got one and they wanted to know.. its only foaming a littlie under the collection cup the rest is water.. is that normal?

I have never been successful in maintaining a skimmer in my sump. It seems even the slightest variation in water levels etc, would set it off. I finally mounted mine over the sump and haven't had any issues since.

I was told to maintain the water (or bubble level, depending on how you look at it) about 1/2 to 3/4 of the way up the angled part of the skimmer below the collection cup. Mine is about 1" below the bottom of the collection cup and it's dark green soup, about 1/2 the cup every 4 days. It stays fairly steady and mine sits constantly in about 10" of water in my sump.

I have a G1X and it was notorious for being difficult to adjust I suggest that you put in the Gate Valve modifiaction. It makes it much easier to control. It will always vary with water level in the sump so that is another problem by itself. If you can control your sump level +- .25" then it should run great.

Thanks for the pointers. I cleaned it out last night and the filter floss in my muffler was dirty and clumped up. Problem solved!

Hi Jim,

I have my G3 with the gate mode in a 10gal. sump. The G3 takes up about half the space in the 10 gal tank.
