ASM G3 Skimmer water depth

I had always thought that maintaining a constant skimmer depth was desired for in-sump skimmers. Is this correct?

I was going to put a small tub in the center of my stock tank to maintain the depth and was told it wasn't necessary.

I have a G1 in about 10" of water, and like stated above, the more stable the water level, the less screwing around I do with the riser tube.

My G3 sits in a chamber in my sump that gets deeper when i top off, and gets shallower when its low, it probably fluctuates 2-3 inches daily and no ill effects. pulls skimate at a great rate throughout the day, without fussing with the riser tube.

As a side note, I suggest a "mesh mod" which I did on mine and it made a noticeable difference in what it was pulling out and the volume of bubbles.
