ASM G3 Skimmer

I have an ASM G3 that was free. I am setting up a 125 gallon tank. Does anyone have any experience with these skimmers? I am looking at doing the gate valve mod. Any insight is appreciated.

They maybe old school compared to what's on the market these days but they are solid skimmers, they overate themselves a bit but a g3 would be fine for a mixed 125, if you were going all sps w a high fish load a g4 or g4x would be my recommendation.

But yeah a free g3? Can't beat that, you will be very happy with it.

I run an ASM G3 on my 90 mixed reef (more fish than inverts though). I did replace the pump on mine as the older Sedra kept getting jammed up. I have not found any of the ASM mods to make much differently, frankly.

Have you tried the enkle mat/ meshwheel mod to the impeller? I agree the gatevalve mod really isn't needed.

My only gripe about ASMs is they are pretty fragile, so care must be taken when cleaning

Yeah, tried the mesh wheel, recirculation and gate valve mods - latter adds convenience, none affected performance IME. They are cheaper extruded plastic, so agree that care is called for.

I use a G2 with a gate valve mod on my 120. It does a good enough job, but I try not to overfeed so I'm sure that helps. The mod does make adjusting it easier.

what pump did you replace it with? I have the g3 with a bad pump.

Thanks,
Dirk

I have been running a ASM G2 (with Sed5000 pump upgrade) for 9yrs. Its a solid performer. I did a bubble plate mod and that helped reduce the excess micro bubbles out the overflow.

I just set up a tank that has been up running with an ASM G2 for 4mths. How much skim mate should I be getting? I have not emptied the container once. I assume I should adjust to get the container filled one a week?
