asm or euro reef skimmer?

ASM doesn't make a good skimmer for the price, ER is much better company with infinitely better products. ASM used to be the go to skimmer when Reef Octopus wasn't around and the ASM was still cheap, but they raised their prices. I can't think of a single reason why anyone would purchase a ASM when there are much better options available. The NW-200 would kick butt on a 40 and its $209, hard to beat a 8" body and 24" height on a 40 gallon tank.

And if you look, you can find it for $199

your Reef Octopus and ASM are all most the same thing .. yes they are cheeper .. what pump does the Ro use .. i know the ASm uses sedra !

Reef Octopus and ASM aren't even close to the same thing, you are sorely mistaken. The quality is on two completely different levels.

the reason i said the rs80 over the 100 is because its taller. from my experience having a 6-3 the taller the better more contact time.
i personally would like to see the rs80 beside the 100 in a actuall contest. they both have the 3500 pump. and the rs100 is quiet a bit more. i had a rs100 i just wasnt impressed with it.

I read somewhere that ER uses a different needle wheel than ASM.

Any truth to that?

FWIW I have an ASM g4x. I bought it because it was the biggest skimmer I could afford. I got it, used here on RC.

ER does have tighter construction and the ASM does leak, the material is quite flimsy. I have a basement sump so a bit of mess doesn't bother me. If it was leaking in my living room I'd be upset.

However from a performance standpoint I can't see how that matters. The leak is small and the skimmate collection is excellent.

In terms of the skimming method I don't see any difference at all unless you note that the ER has a slightly narrower neck.

I don't know anything about the octopus. I've never seen one. If anyone has pictures of the needle wheel I'd like to see them. Also, it should be noted that the octopus has an elbow that forces the water to swirl in the reaction chamber that, in my mind, is going to increase reaction time. I think the biggest difference is going to be in which pump works the best.

Here is a pic. of the 200 I just bought for $200, now for that price neither ASM or ER can touch it. It's not bad as far as construction of materials and build, and skims good. I have owned a G3 in the past and all I have to say is this, why would I spend the x-tra bucks on something that is built as cheap and not much of a performance boost?

so does the reef octopus outperform the g3 or the other way around?

I think that's what he was trying to say.

I'd pick the NW200 over the ASM G3 simply becuase of the larger diameter it will give you more options down the road if/when you need to upgrade it. Since the mesh wheel impeller can be done to both of them, I really wouldn't be concerned with the current pump abilities.

Likely though you can get a new NW200 for less than a used G3 so if you can fit it in your sump, really sounds like a no brainer and thats coming from a owner of both Euroreef and ASM skimmers........

as long as your willing to do some modding, I dont' really consider any of them to be significantly better than the other as far as brands. But would likely not choose a RS model Euroreef because of the extruded which can be trickier to mod.

Only the RS80 Promo model is extruded. All other ER skimmers are cell cast. The Octopus are a good value, but it seems the pumps do not perform well unless you modify them.
