ASM or Octopus protien skimmer?

I am currently setting up a 120 and was wondering which protien skimmer i should go with. I have heard good things about both skimmers but am not sure why the octopus is so much cheaper.

I am wondering if it is a situation where you get what you paid for, or if the octopus is really a quality skimmer?

I ordered the Octo skimmer. If you are willing to wait about 3 days, I can post a detailed review with pics.

I was preferring the Euro-Reef, but at 1/4 the cost, I chose Octo.

I just hooked up my NW200 and I am very impressed. The construction is better than ASM (had a G-5) and I like the pumps better also.

The construction is totally superior to asm. the price is going to be less for the same size so for the 120 I would get the 8 inch octo. would do an awesome job. 6inch would be decent.

ASM has a better pump. If money is not an issue, you will get a more powerful skimmer with ASM. You may want to check out The euro-reef RS line as well. Their pumps are better than ASM.

But if you are on a budget, there is no doubt that RO is the best way to go.

An ASM G4 and a NW200 are the same size. FOr that matter, the $138 Shredder is teh same size too, and could have the venturi plugged and a NW pump thrown on. You could have a 8x24" skimmer with a genx 4100 on it for under $200.

NW200: 200
Shredder: 138
G4: 365

Is a $69 ($28 for OEM) Sedra pump worth spending $200 more dollars and getting a completely inferior skimmer body?

To me, not a chance in hell.

Alright rich, you win. The RO is the best skimmer in the world. Period.

Its the best skimmer for the money right now.

Its ASM 2 or 3 years ago, only much better build quality.

I have been running an OCT NW-200 for a couple month and all I can say is--wow!
It is pulling out a lot of crud and is extremely quiet. I think I have been impressed with the OR pump more than anything. Very quiet and low power consumption.
I have never owned an ASM, so i can't comment on build quality difference, but I will say that the OCT is very well built and is sturdy.
Oh--and it doesn't leak!!!:) Although I run it in-sump, so leaking wouldn't be an issue.
Anyway, HTH.

RO--Reef Octupus brand skimmers (marketed under Coralvue--I think)
OR--OceanRunner brand pumps that are used by Reef Octopus

I have a NW 110 on my 50. Right now I have a light bio load and I get a light green skim that reaks!! I paid with shipping 110.

I thought ocean runners pulled in more air than sedra's? Saw in most diy's threads they were preferred over sedra pumps. Would think that would make it a no brainer. Hth.

The RO skimmers have pumps made by the same manufacturer as the OR pumps. I have both Octopus pumps and OR pumps, and they are practically identical.

My ASM is loud, needs a gate valve mod and leaks all over the place. I wouldn't get another one.

The mod using a ball valve took all of 10 mins and 10 min trip to HD.....Less than a half hour of my time and $10 and mine is very quiet...:D

RO over an H&S? It would really depend on the situation. If money is not an option than I'm sure most would say to go with H&S or Deltec.

IMO the RO performs more than sufficiently for my tank and I'd much rather spend the extra $ on other things like livestock, etc.

It's kind of like cars--some swear by Mercedes, BMW, etc, while other's are more satisfied with a Toyota or Nissan, etc.
Again--pretty big price difference between a Mercedes and a Toyota.

When it's all said and done it really boils down to what you feel works best for you and how much money you are comfortable with spending.

At least there are more companies making these products and offering the consumers more options from inexpensive to ultra-high-end.
HTH
