asm or octopus skimmer

The Sedra is a better pump, however build quality over-all on the Octopus is better for nearly half the price. You can replace the pump and still be ahead.

i just found an octopus nw 200 and it has the OTP-3000 pump. does anyone know the footprint on this skimmer??? will this be too much skimmer for my 72 gal???

May not be practical to replace the pump. By the time you add the fitting required the foot print becomes pretty large.

Meshmodded pulls almost 50 schf at under 30w. Absolutely spanks everything else.

......if you can get it to start man. ; )

In my personal opinion, Yes you will be over-skimming with the modded 200 on a 72. However, in stock form I am betting it wont be that bad seen as the 200 out of the box is not a stellar performer for the tank size it is rated for. It also gives you a skimmer that will allow you to grow into a bigger tank at a later date if need be without unloading equipment and buying new stuff. Again just my personal opinion.

Actually there are fewer windings on the motor. Completely lower grade pump with the same nameplate and price. .

I have been searching for this info. I can't find it. Do you have a link to the change in the motor?

Thanks!

Its in the octopus modification thread.

In that thread they only show a change in the impeller, not the pump itself. That thread is where I got the picture above. They didn't mention the motor change.

there is considerable chatter that the windings in the motor have been changed. I haven't seen any documentation to that yet, as I am running the much less popular (due to size) OTP1000 pump which I believe is still the same as always.

Had a sponsor tell me they are considering dropping these, he said the old pumps were underpowered (stock) and the new ones make this skimmer useless. My experience was bad with the new pump also. However for the price the body is still a good deal if you can convert the pump.
