Most BB people run their skimmers wet. The gate mod makes it easier to fine tune your level. I have done nothing with the air intake but some have a carbon/floss filter on it.

I have a question, I see some place that carry the ASM G4 skimmer with a Sedra 5000 and another one Sedra 9000.

Does it make that much of a difference to justify for a Sedra 9000, which uses more wattage?

These are two different models. The G4 uses a Sedra 5000, the G4 Plus uses a Sedra 9000. There is a huge difference in performance between the two pumps. Spend a couple dollars more to get the G4 Plus, you will not be disappointed.

just ordered my ASM G3 brand new for $235 shipped!

I want to do the collection cup mod and recirculation mod. What kind of tools do I need? I'm guessing a hole saw? How big of a hole? And I know I need uniseals, what size uniseals?

thanks

You will also need a threading drill bit for the collection cup mod.
Go to Asmskimmer.com for more info on the mods. They sell everything for the ASM skimmers.

I have a G1x with the sedra 3500.
Will the recirculating mod be worth doing?
Will it help in producing more bubbles?
Planning on feeding with a MJ1200.

thanks

For any non-believers

Here is a pic of my new G2 collection cup after only 2 1/2 days in my sump. I broke it in for a week in a tub of SW that I added a few gallons of tank water to. My old skimmer would need a week to do the same.

I am so glad I went with ASM!

This may be buried somewhere in this thread and if so, I apologize, but is anyone using the gen-x NW pumps on their ASM skimmers? I have a G2 with no pump and was going to order a Sedra 5000 (BB tank, want to skim wet) but the Gen X pumps are less then half the price?

Thanks

It seems like once a week my skimmer goes absolutely nuts. I come home from work and it's overflowed. I empty the cup, scrub it down, and open the gate valve WAAAAY open, and get stupid amounts of foam. By morning it will have calmed to "normal" ...

<img src="http://www.synthetic.org/lj/90g/nuts.jpg">

I mean, the entire neck is full of huge non-popping bubbles.

Has anyone else experienced/solved this before?

alright here is a question for you guys.

I ran my skimmer in vinegar water for a couple of days and then rinsed it really well. It has been in my sump now for about three days I am expecting it to kick in any time now.

I am running the recirc and gate valve mods.

How will I know when this thing is ready to start doing it's job and what adjustments will I need to make at that point?

Thanks,
C.G.

Yeah, it happened to me a couple of days ago...I don't know why?
I did a water change the night before....mayby that was it?

What a beautiful picture!

I've had my G2 for about a month and I'm also quite pleased with it. I enjoy dumping that gunk out.

Could be. I'm going to start running carbon again, just in case.

Question to all of you that are gravity dumping water in the skimmer straight from your tank

I have always been fustrated at judging the proper water level in the riser tube. The turbulent water flow coming from the tank made the water level unpredicatble, often waking up in the morning to a filled overflow bucket. I know a lot of posts have stated this problem, with no real solution. Maybe this has already been suggested and maybe there's been a posted picture of my solution, but here's what I did..

I simply put a Tee befor the skimmer body and ran a riser tube up to let out the air mixture coming from my tank. The result is a steady water line in the skimmer riser tube.

Hopefully this won't affect the effecient skimming my G3 has been doing since my mod's.

I did read that the Gen X 2400 (600gph)with needle wheel works pretty good. Some said it worked better then the sedra 3500.
Let me know if you decide to get a gen x.

I recently purchased a G3 for my 75G and I am doing the gate, recirc, and feed mods this weekend. I would like to run the overflow directly to the skimmer body - feed mod - I think that what ASM calls it. I have the uniseal but I have a couple questions before drilling.

How far down from the neck rim do I drill?

Should I place a ball valve directly before the hole to help regulate
flow?

I plan to run the flex pipe directly from the HOB overflow directly to the 1" hole in the skimmer - is that the correct sequence?

Thanks for the help - Pics appreciated.

Jer

I have no direction for you as far as drilling into your skimmer, but if you put a ball valve on your overflow line you better have somewhere else for that water to go like a T or Y into your sump otherwise it will just backup into your main tank and you will have a nice flood. Best way to regulate the overflow gph would be a valve on the output side of your return pump, if it can handle the pressure of being regulated that way.

Thanks - didn't think of that but it makes good sense :). I planned the ball valves on the return anyway so thats not an issue - mag 9 for a return.

I drilled mine about 2 inches from the top. As seen in this photo. Modded G4, even have UV Sterilizer running off the return.
