If you drill the hole a little too small ...you will never get the uniseal in.....make it the right size and then silicone around it.......you know they hardly ever leak.....I would only worry about it if the skimmer was going to be out side the sump.....and take it from a guy that just switched from an external skimmer to a G3 in the sump....ITS ALOT SAFER

If I could run it in sump I would...but my system can't take the extra heat. I don't have the extra $ to buy a chiller so external here I come...thanks for the input!!!

formula - You won't have good luck with any sedra out of the water they do not seal well, and they will not last long, they do over heat. You could plumb a 5gallon bucket in to your system B4 your sump, and just punch a hole in it then run an overflow to your sump. Tank into 5g bucket in to sump, I have seen a few people do it that way.

indy I think yours is set maybe a touch too hight lower it about an inch or so and you should be rockin.. then when you get good foam started and the inside starts to get the slim gunk build up you can raise it up that 1 inch... thats what I do.

ASM skimmers are in-sump only. I wouldn't try to run it outside as the O-rings on the body and neck don't remain water tight over time. If you do rig this skimmer to run in an external container, be sure you have a drain or very large container. If the skimmer starts leaking while away you could either drain your whole tank, or if using a top-off system you could end up replacing your whole tank with fresh RO water. :eek2:
Either would be a disaster!

BTW, placing this skimmer outside won't keep that much heat from entering your tank. The pump still needs to sit in water, and heat will transfer from that water back into your tank via the skimmer effluent. IMHO, save yourself the headaches and place the skimmer in your sump. Then just add a small cheap fan on an appliance timer to blow across the sump. The sedra pumps don't put out near as much heat as Mag pumps so I don't think it will be as bad as you think.

FYI.. when doing my recirc mod.. The uniseals are a lot easier to use when you heat them up a little in the microwave... Once they cool down and have the plumbing in them, they are good to go...

I'm having trouble putting the intake of my Sedra 9000 in the uniseal because it's too tight. Will putting the uniseal in the microwave help me insert the intake of the pump?

try a little bit of lubrication (I think that I used vegetable oil) on the pipe, should help force it through the uniseal.

OK, I am having a problem with my G5 skimmer and hoping you guys can help me. It seems as though after a few hours of skimming the skimmer just stops performing correctly. Let me say that I did do the modification with 2 90 degree elbows and additional plumbing so that the water coming out goes down into my sump instead of splashing all over the place. I hope you guys understand what I mean. Anyway I don't know if it is one of my pumps or something else causing the problem. I tried to read as much of the thread as possible but I can't find any answers. I have to keep unplugging and restarting to have it work correctly. Does anyone know what my problem is?

It certainly will. Just don't go over kill with it.. I had mine in maybe 25-30 seconds max on a spinning plate thing... It was a little hot to the touch in the center, but it made it very much more pliable.. I had no trouble whatsoever.... It goes into the skimmer body very easily, and the venturi then goes right into it, making a super tight seal..

i have a question also i have Just bought a G2 and in reading it seems like alot of people have an elbow inside the chamber to make the water go downinstead of against the wall what size do i need and should it be 90 or 45?
thanks

It's a 3/4" elbow. I'm using a 90, but I don't think there'd be anything wrong with a 45. Since they're like $.75 each, why not pick up one of each and experiment?

Anyone tried a "T" i see some new needle wheel skimmers out using them,I was gonna try one today but the pvc store in my garage seemed to be out that size:D .Might work better than a 45,Altho i have yet to try one.

I have a "T" on my G3 right now..........I used a 90 first, then a 45 and now the "T"......I have only had it in place for about 20 hours now, so the verdict is still out

Does anyone have problems regulating the water level in their skimmer? I'll set my water level right where Indy1 has it in that picture above. Then when the skimmer starts to foam, I come back the next morning and the water level has dropped by an inch or more. Then without even touching the gate valve, I'll clean the cup and slap it back on. 15 minutes later I look at the water level, and it's 1/2 from the top of the cup, all without me touching the gate valve. This is a recirc'd G1X fed by a feed pump.

don't the new Euro's have a "T" with a 45 at each end angled to make like a circular motion of the water....

Bill and Elaine--> Keep us posted... I was thinking of trying this...

trmiv, I had the same problem. I fixed it by changing the setup of the gate vavle. I have the gate vavle first then the 90. I tried the 90 first, but my water level would change on me like yours is.
