ASM Skimmer Club!

Hi, I've had my ASM G3 on my 120 for a couple of months and I'm pretty satisfied with it. I have the gate valve installed and made the skimmer a recirulating skimmer. I have a direct feed from the main tank which i estimate to be maybe 250-350gph. My problem is this: every two-to-three days, I'll notice that the bubble mass is very very low. To fix this, I just place my finger over the airline (preventing air from getting through) until there are just about no bubbles left in the skimmer. Then I let go and its back to normal... lots of bubbles! I haven't made one of those air filters for it yet... would that work? If not, what would prevent my bubble mass from fading every few days?

Do you mean that the bubbles fade in the entire skimmer as if not gaetting any air or do mean they're fading from the skimmer cup and the level is going down?

Well that lasted long. How in gods name did I last months with the Sedra 2500? What a peice of garbage.

Back on the 5000, mounted vertically. I just wish the hole was lined up so that I could mount it vertically.

Kind of both i think. Instead of the skimmer body being a pretty solid white, it becomes sort of grey. And because of the decrease in amount of bubbles, the foam no longer overflows into the cup... in fact, there is no foam when this happens. I'll see if I can get pics to compare.

Urabggr..

Yupe I'm having the same problem as yours. The first 1-2 days, it skims like crazy. However, after the third day, the amount of bubbles decrease... and so the foam. I fix it by turn on and off the pump. Weird problem tho.

BTW, I'm runing Recir also. My feeding is from maxi-jet 1200.

Having a problem w my G2 now w the water running through too fast and spilling out like crazy from the return tube. If I block the airline tube for a while it will settle down, but not for long.

I guess I will take it apart and clean it again, but just did this about a month ago.

I have to agree with my patriot friend. Your problem Urabggr sounds like salt creep or somthing else that is cloging the air line.

Djtodd... I have mine at about a 25-35 degree angle...no problems thus far.

Is your sump level constant?

I used a few slim CD jewel cases as a shim under the skimmer body, and that gave it enough height that it lined up with the pump sitting as it should.

Strangely, I notice that the skimmer performs very differently when the lights are off on the tank.

is it skimming more with the lights off?

how much did the PH drop?

The net effect is that the foam production looks like I've closed the gate valve significantly. Happens at night. This might be why I was waking up to find the collection cup overflowing a LOT recently.

I've opened the valve up a couple of notches, which tends to impede skimming a bit during the day, but since the lights are only on for 9 hours, I figure I'll find a happy balance eventually.

This may have been stated before, but does anyone know if there is a big difference between the ASM skimmers and Euro-Reef skimmers (besides construction materials)? They seem to have the same design, although I know the Euro-Reef skimmers are built with more expensive materials. I guess I am just interested in quality of skimmate.

Thanks,
Jared

SKIMMER MOD. WELL WORTH THE MONEY!!

SKIMMER MOD. WELL WORTH THE MONEY!!

I RECENTLY BOUGHT AN ASM G4 PLUS AND INSTALLED IT IN MY SUMP AND WAS PLEASED WITH HOW IT OPERATED BUT REALIZED WHAT A POOR DESIGN THE ADJUSTMENT TUBE WAS..IT EITHER WAS TOO WET OR NOT WET ENOUGH AND I COULDN'T GET IT "DIALED IN" THE WAY I WANTED. I BOUGHT THE MATERIALS TO MODIFY IT LIKE THE ASM WEBSITE SHOWS. WHEN I RAN IT I KEPT HAVING IT OVERFLOW INTO THE CUP, EVEN WHEN THE VALVE WAS ALL THE WAY OPEN. I SEEN THE WAY BILL AND ELAINE HAD THEIRS SETUP AND COPIED THEIR METHOD WITH THE ELBOW GOING DIRECTLY INTO THE GATE VALVE AND ........PROBLEM SOLVED!! I WANTED TO SAY THANKYOU TO (BILL AND ELAINE) FOR POSTING THE PIC'S. I AM ASSUMING SINCE MY SUMP DEPTH IS 8 INCHES THAT THIS IS WHY IT KEPT OVERFLOWING WITH THE STANDARD DESIGN SHOWN ON THE ASM WEBSITE.IN CONCLUSION.THE SKIMMER WORKS GRRREAT AND IT IS SO EASY TO ADJUST THE SKIMMER WET-DRY WITH A SIMPLE TURN OF A DIAL.

THANKS FOR THE EXCELLENT INFO!
REGARDS,MIKE

has anyone used a sedra 9000 or 12000 as there recirc pump on the g3?i read thru the last ten pages or so,and noticed a deltec mod mentioned.what is that?and something about turning the pump sideways.ive had my g3 with gate valve mod for a year now and it has performed well.id like to tinker with it and see if i can make it better.i also seen someone mentioning putting a t inside the skimmer body how is that helping?thanks

Well i submerged the air intake in a cup of freshwater, letting it suck in the water. It seems to have worked because not only has my bubble mass remained strong, the skimmer is now skimming very well! Instead of a full cup every week if im lucky, I'm getting a full cup every 2-3 days. Thanks!
