Questions on convertying ASMG6 to be used out of sump....

Is it even possible? This thing is a beast, way to tall to fit into my stand so I am now wondering if it is even possible to make this work with my set up.

ASM skimmers are NOT external skimmers. If you want to run it external to your sump, be prepared to heavy modified the skimmer.

ive had a asmg3 with gate mod running on my 120 for about a year now,and im itching to play around with it.im thinking about adding another pump recirc style ,should i use another 5000 or should i go ahead and get a 9000?will that be too much for a g3?anyone that has done this has it made a improvement or will i be wasting time and money?



sellout07,let us know how you like the asmg6.im thinking about buying one for my next tank in the next couple months.

after test running the skimmer for a few hours. I can imagine having it setup as an external skimmer. I notice one spot where water is slowly leaking between the body and the cone part. But no biggie cause its in a sump so it can leak all it want.

I have found the best mod is to recirc the skimmer and direct feed it from the display. Give the skimmer all of the raw water coming from the tank. As long as you are not running a ton of flow through the overflows you'll be OK. I have had a massive increase in skimmate since direct feeding mine.

i'm feeding my skimmer via a pump from which overflow goes into the skimmer section. I guess its the next closest thing to direct-direct feeding from the display. I figure this way i wont run into any unconsistant flow.

Thats they way I intend to run mine. I am placing a pump directly under the discharge from my overflow to feed the skimmer with.

I have a G4 and I run the overflow from the skimmer directly into the return section of my sump. This way the skimmer is not re-skimmer the same water. Works for me, I dont have a lot of flow coming through mine(3X-5X)

That is another good idea. In recirc mode I will only have about 150 gallons or so/hr going through the skimmer, I will dump this into the return compartment that way the skimmer is always working on raw nasty water.

Well, I just spent the last half-hour searching for the answer to the following question, and it's probably because I'm blind, or tired, or both, but I can't find it. So, my question. When breaking in an ASM G3, I know some people use vinegar. I'm assuming they aren't using full strengh vinegar to run it in, so, is that correct, and if so, what 'strength' vinegar solution should I use? I've got a large tub with 10 inches of fresh water in it for breaking the G3 in, and I put in about 12 ounces of white vinegar (that's all I had in the house). Should I be using more?

The vinegar is just to remove the oils and chemicals on the skimmer that are there from the manufacturing. I used about 4 gallons of vinegar that is on the grocery shelf. I'm not aware of different strength of vinegar, in a 15 gallon tank for a hour or so.
Then I filled up the 15 gallon tank with saltwater from a existing tank and let it run that way for a few days while I finished setting up the new tank.

I hear this being asked a thousand times, not sure why it is still an issue. Just install and skim. No need to use vinegar or fresh water.

Plug in the skimmer and be done with it.

Well if you can shorten the breakin peroid, why not?
It doesn't take any effort.

My thoughts exactly. Sure it will work just plugging it in. But I have a couple of days to go before my tank has water flowing through it, so what the heck. I ended up dumping another 16 oz of vinegar in the tub, who knows if it helped or not.

I just took my G3 out of the box, stuck it in the sump turned it on, 2 days later funky dark crud. Has not stopped since.
