Hi! I'm anew member of the club. I've got my ASM G3 in the sump running, waiting on my liverock to ship in. I have already done the gate valve mod, the recirc mod and the direct feed from overflow mod. My question is: with all of these mods, does the water height it runs in still make any difference? Thanks for any help.

Can anyone help with this question??

Thanks!!

Some people will tell you that just a few inches will make a difference.
I believe that if you have a steady water level in your sump and the ability to regulate the water height in the skimmer, that's all you need to get the best performance out of a skimmer.

Thanks mfinn, that's kinda what I was thinking. I couldn't see how much difference the water level would make with the gate valve mod installed, but I obviuosly wasn't sure, and understand it's a fine tunig process..... I appreciate all of the experienced "reefers" such as yourself in this forum. I've been lurking here quite some time, and this forum is the reason I chose the ASM skimmer.....

Liverock will be here this evening (120 #'s of Marshall, Kaelini, and Fiji from Premium Aquatics) I'M SO EXCITED!!!! (I sound like one of my kids!!!)

Thanks again for your reply!

I have a G3 currently running on my tank with the gate valve mod and I'm getting ready to do the recirc mod. I was given a Sedra 9000 and was wondering if I could use this pump instead?

Thanks.

I am going to sell it if it won't work on my G3!

Are there any height differences between the 5000 and the 9000?
Can't you just swap pumps?

I'd sure give it a try

I tried to use it normally and there's about 1 cm difference (and it turned out to be a little too much pump. I think I'm going to measure between the intake and output of both pumps to see if they are the same and then I'll give it a try.

Did you try and use it as a feed pump/standard application or in the recirc mod?
I would think that it would be too much flow for a feed pump/with needlewheel action, but a kickass recirc mod pump.

But I have to say, I haven't done this, so I'm just guessing.

I tried it in the feed pump configuration. I'm going to try it as the recirc.

Question.......what should I use as the supply pump??

Dump the overflow directly into the skimmer body. I wouldn't run my skimmer any other way. I have gotten huge increases in performance.

That would eliminate the use of another pump such as a maxi-jet, like I'm using now.

The only thing I'm a little curious about is how do you figure how much flow you are getting though the skimmer?

Yes you do eliminate another pump. As far as flow, I dont concern myself with the exact amount. I am a big proponent of slow sump turnover anyway. You could T off and divert around the skimmer if needed, but it would defeat the point a little.

I wanted to get the G2 for my 75g and the problem I have is that I only have a 10g sump ..bc I can't fit anything bigger. My question is that is there a possible way to use this skimmer with out putting it in the 10g? Could I somehow put it outside the 10g, which will be fully used up? Is it possible anyway? My 10g is split into 4 by 10x10 lexan. Thanks

I Just finnished the recirc mod on my G3. going to try it out tommorow. Plan on trying a maxijet 600 as the feed pump first. Water from the overflow will enter the skimmer compartment and the gate valve will exhaust into the return compartment. In teory this would be the same as direct feed from the tank as raw water from the overflow will be the only water entering the skimmer. this is on a 125 so I am hoping the 600 is in the ballpark.

I'm sure this has been asked before but is there anyplace to buy premoded skimmers for the not so handy?

I looked into this and everyone else said it wasn't worth it -- additional plumbing needed to handle surges or decreased efficiency from fluctuating water levels. If you run your overflow into your skimmer section and the skimmer outflow into your return and use a pump to pull water from your skimmer section you get the same thing --- 100% gunky water.

If your G-2 is anything like my G-4, I would say no. These skimmers leak bad.
Is there anyway you could split your drain and use another small tank to put your skimmer in and have it drain into your main sump for return?
