Came home today, and water was everywhere. The water level in the skimmer went so high the top was bouncing up and down above the collection cup, splattering water all around.. Miracle it didn't trip a GFI it was that bad.
When I went to work in the morning, there was no more than 1/16" of skimmate in the cup, top of foam was halfway down the neck.
Annoying as all hell.

I got 2 G-3's and a mini. To date, none of them are modded. I'm tearing down my systems to concentrate on one larger system. I was debating selling the ASM's and just buying a different skimmer but so many of you seem to think these are good skimmers after the mods are done that I think I'm going to try it. I haven't read this entire thread so I don't know if this has been discussed or not.
My idea is to do the mesh mod on the needlewheel as well as the recirc mod.
In thinking which way to go with the new feed that I would need I was pondering using the pump from the mini. This would add even more air into the skimmer but would slow the flow. The slower flow would also allow the recirc pump to actually recirculate the water more giving even more dwell time.
Has anyone ever tried this?

I just ordered my free samples.
Also, since we're all looking for more air and the right size bubbles, what would be wrong with using the sedra as normal and just drill two more holes and add an additional needlewheel for the recirc pump? That sounds like it would produce an awesome amount of bubbles.

Only thing I can think of is that the cap on the pipe that goes up from the gate valve fell off. Not sure why that would affect the water level in the skimmer but it seems that it may have. Have it on there tighter now. Seemed to be skimming ok this morning. But we'll see. Good foam in the neck now. Cup could well be going nuts by 6pm. So no, no idea.

You have to be careful that you don't create too much turbulence. If you're talking about two sedra 5000's on a G3 I think that would be way too much. JMO

Well it wasn't the cap falling off. Woke up this morning, same thing. Clear watter to the top of the cup, lid bouncing all over, tiny bubbles overflowing the top of the neck.
When I went to bed, the water level was near the bottom of the cone. The water was making that gurgling sound exiting the gate valve indicating water level in the skimmer body was low.
I obviously had to crank the gate valve down again, 2 full turns this time -- overkill. We'll see...

Sedra 5000 died.

Anyone know where I can get the Sedra 5000 pump for cheap, or have an extra one that you would like to part out, I just did the mesh wheel mod last week, it was running perfectly 'til last night when I stopped it to feed SPS with oyster eggs, and when I plug it back in the pump just complete quick, no hum or vibration what so ever.
Let me know if you guys experience the same thing after mesh wheel mod, wondering if that places too much stress on the pump.

Hello Everyone-
I own an ASM G4 with Sed. 9000 pump, gate valve mod, feed mod, mesh mod, and still want more out of it!!
I have been reading ALOT about skimmers, not just ASM but all of them and I plan to do a recic. mod. on my G4 and would like some advice on pumps to use. I question if a better pump would be a Gen x4100 or a Gen x6000? Can this size skimmer handle two mesh modded 4100's or one 6000? Does anyone have a comparable sized skimmer with recirc./mesh mod. that is getting good results?
All help/advice is greatly apprecaited!

I have an ASM G2 w/3500 pump non modded as yet.
I will do the recirc mod and the mesh mod very shortly.
The feed- I would like to have from my drain probably off a ball valve in order to control the amount feeding the skimmer and the excess into the sump.
How do you know how much water to feed the skimmer where it would be too much or too little?
2nd question: Those who have done mesh mods- Is there any indication that they will come apart?
And what has happened to the black bushing on top of the ceramic shaft top part of impeller. Is it removed? I dont see it on any of the pics.

Hi all,
I currenly own gate valve and recirculating moded ASM G3 just installed M3 strip pad mesh wheeled two weeks ago injected with Ozone, as I just found out that material became brittle by O3 and was further aggrevated by high speed spinning. As the pad became loose inside the housing, the pump was totally jamed up.
Please be awared that the pad you are using is not ozone compatibl as I know a lot of you are using it to purify the water.

I don't have a camera so I'll try to describe the differences. Plus is twice as thick and much firmer. Also the weaving isn't quite as random as with Enkamat. The squares that the weave form are roughly .5x.5". Lastly, the plus is backed with a fabric but can come off easily if you so chose.

Thank you LxOxSxI for the pics and the link to Colbond.com, I also got the sample of Enkamat Plus, but don't think the plus makes a good mesh material for the matrix is very loosely spaced, do you think the regular Enkamad 7010 is the same as the one that people been using to make the mod........can't really tell how dense it is comparing with the plus through the picture,.
