i have been noticing when im looking at sumps the skimmer is sitting up off of the bottom of the sump. i have a asmskimmer g-2, i knew they where suppose to sit up off the bottom a little bit but how much and why?

It can sit on the bottom of the sump with no issues. some times the application may need the skimmer raised off the bottom due to sump water level etc...

Hi Shawn,

I am thinking of buying a G3 skimmer fron Dan, what's the deal with the two mods ASM calls out(recirculate & gate valve). Are they really needed to make the skimmer function like it should?
Can Dan get one or both for me when I order the skimmer?

Dave

Date Valve they say lets you control the water level more precisely but I have never had any trouble using the standpipe in an ASM or EuroReef to adjust the level. As for the recirc, once again I have heard they work a little better but once again I have not messed with it. In both of our opinions the skimmers work well enough out of the box for it not to be needed but can always be done by the owner if they want to experiment. The only complaint we ever had with performace was with the G4 which we got them to start selling us them with the 9000 pump instead cause it worked night and day better and now ASM sells that as the G4+

there is a never ending asmskimmer thread. from there, it sounds like the optimum placement of the asm skimmer is about 6 to 8 inches below the surface of the water. in my sump, i use some pvc and egg crate to raise it up.

some do the recirc mod where they use the pump for recirculation and sump return (from main tank) to supply the skimmer. the idea is to keep the water inside the tube as long as possible.
