ATB Multi

Judging from how mine performs on 38ish gallons of fairly light bioload, it's maybe overkill on 18 gallons. It can handle way more than what I'm throwing at it. Though one guy has it on a 28 if you check his pics on the atb forum. who knows? if too much for 18, that gives reason to upgrade ;)

Thanks for the reply. How large is the skimmer? I have not seen one in person, and wonder what it would look like hinging on an 18 gallon ADA tank

Don't understand so many posts about overkill on a skimmer. The basics behind a skimmer operation is a simple principle. Just like the apple that falls from the tree; if there are compounds in the water that will react, THEY WILL!!! It's that simple.

Unless one is using some very poorly designed unit, with a very weak pump, or even one that is working on an airstone, it will remove GUNK!!!!!

In my opinion the construction of Protein Skimmers has gone over the top, especially the pricing. Now I am not saying that there have not been massive improvements, and refinements of those improvements, but give me a break. Do these devices have to be made one at a time, by little German or Italian or Asian Elves and assembled one tiny part at a time, from the most costly plastics, to WORK?????

Why not utilize the current technology and someone attempt to produce these at a reasonable price, so more people might enjoy the benefits of the state-of-art design. This in turn would allow more people to have more success, keeping their systems, and in turn encourage more people to get involved in this fascinating hobby, that otherwise couldn't afford it.

I know you'll say there already are skimmers at reasonable prices. Yes, that is true. But why couldn't this be done with the newest technology. To some folks $500 to in some cases over $1,000.00+ is a lot to spend on one piece of equipment.

In all the years that I have been in this business, I have always attempted to help people get started in the most reasonable manner, not the most costly manner.

Who out there has the guts to utilize the new technology and produce and price one, that would really appeal to the masses.

Would enjoy hearing your opinion, but stay civil. I've been in this field too long to have someone try to tell me I don't know what I'm talking about.

Everyone gains in a true constructive discussion. We all learn, and after all, there is always room in this hobby to learn more.

Regards
Don

Well if you check out reeftivo's pics in the atb forum, it's on a 28 gallon there, maybe that will help you visualize. the skimmer is about 24" high, and from memory, the bracket to hang on rim is about 10 or 11" up from bottom?

I am debating between the ATB Multi and the Deltec MCE600

I've had both and prefer the ATB (though I've only had it ~3weeks, but the design & construction is excellent, and there is something to the cone shape). The deltec mce600 rocks too though, and since using as hang on, will be less obtrusive on your tank, it's not as deep or as high up. Both nice skimmers, and both leave room to upgrade shoudl you so choose.
