Hello RC I have a 4x54w t5 fixture that im looking to replace the stock bulbs cause the kinda suck, but ive been reading that everyone seems to be a huge fan of the ati blue+ bulbs and are running like 3 of them in a 4 bulb combo. I would like to have a deep purple overtone to my tank with out making it pink so for my 4 bulb combo I was thinking of running.

Front.

Purple plus
Blue plus
Aquablue special
Purple plus

Back.

Also does anyone have any comments about the growth of their corals under so much blue plus/purple plus but not much white light? I dont want to sacrafice too much growth for just appearance of light. If my frags dont grow my tank will just look like rocks haha

Seems like it would be a lot of Blue and not much for coral growth. This pic comes out more white, than it actually is. In person, it is more blue, but not overpowering.

I am using:

Front.

Blue Plus
Coral Plus
AquaBlue Special
10,000k
Blue Plus
Actinic

Back.

This is a month & a half worth of growth under 4x24 Sunpower with 2 blue plus,1 purple, & 1 actinic.

This is less powerful than the combo I recommended. Actinic has low PAR.

That will be super pink. Mike have the right combo. 2 blue, 1 purple and 1 coral plus.

Your combo isn't very purple & blue plus bulbs grow coral very well.

2 blue plus
1 coral plus
1 purple plus

This is what your after.

Ah because the purple plus is up front thats going to be the dominant color when viewing from the front. Thank you.

Erock I thought the coral plus had a more 15k spectrum and the aquablue special 10k. I may have that backwards. Do the blue plus and purple plus do anything for growth or are they just for appearance?

Blue plus may not look the brightest to your eye but they have equal PAR to daylight bulbs like the aquablue special. They grow coral trust me.

Technically the aquablue special is a 15k like the oral pls but it looks like a 10k bulb, the coral plus is a 15k bulb that represents it much better & has more red spectrum that you will like.

Sounds like blue plus are a sweet package deal with color and growth.

What about changing the order of your suggestion of

F.
Purple
Coral
Blue
Blue
B.

To
F.
Purple
Blue
Coral
Blue
B.

Would this alter the overall appearance of the tank?

Oh and thanks for clearing that up for me.

Do the second combo.
Yes, try out different ways until you find one you like but that sounds just right to me , according to your description.

Thank you so much for your help. I just started my first saltwater tank about 6 months ago and its like a never ending laundry list of things I can do better/improve so im always willing to take some advice and pick the brains of more experienced reefers. I will say though I feel like ove been pretty successful thus far witout killing anything but a shrimp that made it to my porch somehow(its a huge family mystery) and two snails :(

Don't put the purple up front. You end up wasting its main objective: to show off the pinks. Put it in the second slot or even third if it makes sense. But never the front or very rear.

I want the tank to have a deep purple overtone to it with out making it pink. If I put it in the back it will get drown out by the blue plus bulbs. Or maybe not actually.. ill have to just get the bulbs and see.

i would do

coral plus
aquablue spezial
blue plus
coral plus

thats what i have actually :)

after seeing the coral plus, i find the aquablue spezial way too yellow. i would take the coral plus as the new standard bulb, and add one aquablue for brightness/PAR. my dust/dawn setting is 1 blue plus + 1 coral plus.

purple plus IMHO is not necessary in a 4 bulb fixture, and in a 6bulb i would only take it if you have fish/corals that benefit from it, i would guess special wrasses or yellow/green? corals might benefit, i took it out after one bulb cycle because i saw no difference in animals and liked the bluer look better.

greetings
