I used a shower caddy, it was a plastic box with open top and small drain holes on the sides. I put my floats in it, the water was calmer and fluctuated less, therefore triggering less on/offs.
Some sort of splash/wave/snail shield is definitely a must-have. In the past I have used large-diameter PVC caps with a bunch of tiny holes drilled in the bottom. Right now on the big tank I have yogurt cups with holes in them. No PVC caps on hand when I went to set up the ATO.
