Atomikk's 65 Reef

hmm.. thats a wateless idea.. washing them socks... I might have to buy four.. 2 for overflow pipes, 2 for skimmer..

Well today I thought I treat myself since my LFS is having a 25% of renovation sale (and they had a shiet load of good stuff). So I picked up a 9lb piece of LR with 3 different zoa colonies! (Brown, Lime Green and Orange). Also, inside this rock I got a small some type of serpent star. On top of that, I got a 1lb piece containing a Green Zoa colony AND a mushroom colony.

I couldnt resist and bought a peppermint shrimp and a Prawn Goby. I will post pics later.

Here are the pics...

Well today, and you guys are going to kill me for this, BUT after long contiplation I purchased a 4" Naso Tang. I figured I needed a showpiece, and the Nasser is it. I also added green star polyp colony along with 7 more lbs of LR! I also got....... PICTURES! The tank is a bit cloudy.. but here they are..

Side tank shot... I LOVE the depth of this tank... It gives lots of swimming space for BIG fish.

Now I only got one ****ty pic of the Nasser...

NasoTangs.jpg

Here he is acclimating to the surroundings.. I have a cave setup so that fish who are stressed can go into hiding.

So Far so good with the tang. He seems to be looking for food on the LR. He is still shy to come out, but it will be sooner than later I bet.

When the Nasser gets to 7" mark, the switch to a 200 will be made. I already have (or will have) all the equipment to run a bigger thank...

Are the consequences of adding a tang to a 3 foot tank things like stress which leads to disease (ick)?

Was this sarcastic?

Well if it wasn't, the answer is it all depends on a lot of things (IMO). I have generated hiding areas for him, plus I am going to give him plenty of swimming space. If you deem that 3" is not enough, so be it. I think it is fine right now at his size. In a year, I will get a 200 gal setup, and by then he should be 5-7" and suitable for a larger tank. But for right now, I will be monitoring his health and stress level nonstop.

Sorry, I guess it is hard to express what I mean on the internet. I was in no means trying to be sarcastic. I really wanted to know! I want a tang too...haha

hey I think you are cruising right along. in a couple of months that tank is going to look awesome. keep us posted as how the tank grows :D

Will do. I am figuring that I will definitely have to reaquascape my tank to accomodate the tang.

I will post pics one I complete it tomorrow.

Well today when I got up, I noticed that my Naso tang has a small white spot on its side. Then I noticed another one or two spots on his other side. I thought that he might have scratched himself on some rock. But on futher inspection, I think he has gotten some ick.

So to be safe, I ventured over to my LFS and purchased some Seachem Garlic Extract. Garlic is known to boost the immune system by detoxifying your body (it works as well in humans). So I dropped a teaspoon on it into the tank, and I soaked a strip of Nori Algae with it. Almost immediately the tang was eating it. He takes a few chunks at a time, but he is progressively getting better.

I also reaquascaped the tank to give the tang some swimming space.
I clustered my rocks in the middle to give him approx 4' of swimming space. He still has his hiding spot, which is important at this stage of acclimating.

I will keep you guys posted on how he is doing...

Next.. to setup my refugium...

Good.

Maybe you will learn how to properly care for these animals now.

400w for a 2 feet deep tank? I dont think so, especially if u want some sps

400 is going to cause some heating problems IMO.

Heck, I great SPS with a 175 on a 58g tank. More light is not better, especially past a certain point.

But good luck with it ...

And you people wonder why a lot of us leave this site.. its because of comments like yours! There is no positive reinforcement, so people leave and dont really get guidance, and support.

IF YOU actually read my post, I said that I THINK he has ick and that I will monitor it just to be sure.

SO are you suggesting dual 175w over my 65 or 250w?

Guidance?

You knowingly placed a large fish in a small tank.

You KNEW this fish was too big.

You KNEW this would put it at risk for stress and disease.

Not only that, you waited a pathetic 20 days after setting up your tank to add a delicate, large, expensive fish.

AND, to quote your own words about cycling a tank with a chromis (page 2) you said "I wanted to see how tough these fish really are."

What guidance do you need?

When positive reinforcement and guidance don't work, maybe a wake up kick in the butt is in order.

Shame on you.

You're a discrace to this hobby.

Reef central would be better if you DID leave.

YES SIR. I think I should leave. :rolleye1:

First off, it has been at least 30 days since my cycle started.
Secondly, BOTH of my Chromis are doing well AND eating!
Thirdly, the tang is (upon further inspection) 3.3" big. He has 4' of swimming space, in a 3' tank (you can ponder how that works, and when you get it, you can add it to your 'rules'). This tang now is eating and eating well showing no signs of lethargy.

I am a discrace to this hobby? LOL! Why? Because I didnt follow the 'rules'? Remember something about this hobby (fishkeeping that is, not reefing)... you learn from experience and you take it to the next level. If you stay in touch with your fish and its environment long enough, you can get away from the 'rules' because they are there for the novices, the beginners, the 'i like nemo's!

Notice that I didnt panic like many other do when it comes to injury and/or disease? So, when it comes to taking advice from someone or RC, I will make sure its not from you.

And lastly, if you have nothing positive to say in my thread, just leave it for those who are as negative as you.

30 days. Congratulations on your accomplishment.

You are the reason that the aquarium trade needs to continually purchase fish caught under inhumace conditions.

You are what supplies and saturates the aquarium trade with fish that don't have proper homes.

You are the reason that novices, other than yourself, try to care for fish in conditions unsuitable to their needs.

Please do leave. We will all be better off without the negative example you set.

It is because of partially educated people such as yourself that this hobby turns into a joke for so many people.

It is because of careless people like you that newcomers think that a box of water with a heater can sustain life of delicate and beautiful creatures.

It is because of people like you that I work hard to do the opposite of what you do.

Maybe I should thank you.

Because of your obvious lack of concern for the health of the fish in your tank that you end up looking like a cruel person...maybe that will educate others.

You cycled your tank with living fish to test their virility and supposed indestructibility. Their eyes burned in ammonia. They had to have dirty water pass through their gills for far too many weeks. Sure, they are fine now...but will they live as long as expected? No...they won't.

I usually don't care if people want to keep larger fish in smaller tanks...99.9% of the time it is ignorance and inexperience.

It is when someone who knows better does something stupid and irresponsible...thats when I roll my eyes and get angry.

I trust that people reading this post realize your irresponsible and nonchalant attitude towards this hobby.

It is not a right to keep fish...it is a responsibility.

And it is obviously something you don't take seriously enough to be worthy of "postiive reinforcement." or whatever you complained about.

Someone who does the right thing doesnt need a pat on that back.

If thats what you need, take it somewhere else and leave these forums free of your debris so that true and genuine questions and concerns can garner the attention they deserve.

And dont call me sir. Call me Doctor. Learn some respect while you are treating your overly stressed fish for disease brought on by improper husbandry.

Wait, I am getting my tiny little violine so that I can keep up with your speech.

Dont call me sir, call me doctor rant was hilarious. Is that what you do around people, throw your title around so that you can sound smart? Have you ever met dumb scientists? I have.

I am going to ask you nicely once more not to hijack my thread with your 'GOD ALMIGHTY' statements because you claim to be a 'scientician'.

I NEVER attacked you. I never picked on you. So this was an unwarranted verbal assault. Again, I am asking you to leave my thread. Not only are YOU not a positive person for this hobby, but for the rest of the people who are getting into it.

Your comments such as "It is not a right to keep fish...it is a responsibility." and "Someone who does the right thing doesnt need a pat on that back." shows how self centered you truly are. Come to think of it, you should be leaving this board...

The rhetoric on both sides is thick.

Listen atomikk, the tang shouldn't be there, and your statements made it seem that you realized this much. Sometimes we have to accept that we cant have everything we want.

I am creating a 90g as we speak, and may not even get *any* tang (let alone a Naso, one of the larger, open swimming tangs) because I just may not be able to allow it to THRIVE (not just survive).

You've spent alot of time and money making this tank right with equipment -- make it right with live stock, too.

Good luck.
