Attempting to breed clownfish - log

If the gobies are hanging out together, and not opposite ends of the tanks, they have paired up ;)

Thanks Bill,

I bought them for cleaning and not for mating but I did buy two just in case. I mean it is a breeding system. :D Everytime I have looked in on them they have been not more than a body length from each other.

I will be on the lookout for some SS rotifers. My supplier of rots here only carries L.

So before my trip I transferred GSM batch VII. Probably 100 hatched the day I left. I returned home and none where alive. I think my sitter confused my instructions feed rots to a different tank. Oh well. I did not add OCP1 batch X to this tank as I ran out of time. They hatched in the DT.

I found another baby in OCP1 batch IX so I now have a total of 6. All have their second stripe and they seem to be growing well. They are now 24 days old.

GSM batch VIII is currently on the pot. Looks like they were laid on Monday or Tuesday.

OCP3 batch VII is currently on the pot. Looks like they were also laid on Monday or Tuesday.

Still waiting on OCP1 batch XI.

I'm really wanting my B&W pair to start laying soon. ARGH!

Been pretty busy with life.....not much fish stuff going on.

GSM Batch VIII was attempted with no success. They were all gone by day 2.

OCP3 batch VII continued to disappear a little each day and was not attempted.

OCP1 batch XI was laid and hatched in the display tank on Friday night. My Dad was in town for the weekend and didn't get a chance to move the eggs.

My wife and I have been contemplating upgrading to a bigger house so the fish system may have to go for a while as it's not a great selling feature . All this is up in the air.

I currently have no eggs on any tiles. My rotifers are chugging along great with all three cultures thriving.

What are your thoughts regarding the GSM's? Are they taking food, or are you even able to tell?

The last batch was pretty strange. Water had a TON of rots in the morning and was also pretty green. I came home from work and the tank water was crystal clear, I could not see any rots or larvae. Not sure exactly what happened.

Only the first batch I tried did I ever see a kinked tail. Since then I have not had as much success and I have had a ton more rotifers to feed them.

After not having much success that past 6 months. I am going to go back to basics. I have been trying new things to try and get bigger/better results.

For the next batch I am going to go back to basics, a 5 gallon glass aquarium. I am going to bleach the heater/tank/airline for 24 hours and sterilize everything.

I have got the rotifers going like crazy which is something I never had before even with greater success.

Update:

GSM batch IX was laid down a day or two ago. Not a very good nest.

OCP3 batch VIII was laid down a day or two ago. The nest is sporatic at best. Probably won't attempt this batch.

OCP1 batch XII should be coming soon.

GSM batch IX either hatched or was eaten. The nest was not there this morning. I may have misjudged whent the nest was laid.

OCP1 batch XII was laid down friday night (May 1st).

Came home tonight to find OCP3 male dead. Not sure why no signs of infection or wounds. I'm pretty sure he was alive this morning when I fed them. I had not done a water change in well ..... long enough. I performed a 70 gallon water change tonight. Best guess is probably 60%-70%. NItrate before the water change was off the chart 160+. After water change it was around 80. So based on the size of the water change I can guess it was around 250-300. I'm pretty sure that would not cause any problems. I was considering taking a male from one of my pairs (2 or 4) that are not breeding and putting him in with OCP3 female since she is/was laying eggs.

OPC1 batch XII should hatch tomorrow night. I currently have a tank/heater sitting in a bleach solution. I'm still fighting a ton of cyano in my display tank where OCP1 live. This batch also did not look very orange when it was laid down so I'm not sure what the results may be. I do have rots though.

After the water the B&W pair were going nuts in their pot. Hopefully they will start soon.

GSM batch X looks like it was laid down today.

Will keep everyone updated.

Bummer FB. I would probably find a juvie for the female rather than splitting another pair. I think she'd take to it better.

OCP1 batch XII has been transfered to a sterilized 5 gallon glass tank with new artificial salt water. I added rots and tinted the water green with Instant Algae.

Fingers are crossed.

Hopefully I can get back on track.

The eggs did not hatch the first night and they turned white before the second night.

My streak of bad luck continues!

I have been considering reducing the number of pairs I am attempting to raise.

My plan now is to move out OCP2, OCP3 Female, and OCP4.

Currently the cost of heating all these tanks is killing me. I don't mind paying for the heat if I have juvenilles in the tanks but right now that is not happening.

I will definately be keeping OCP1 and the B&W pair. GSM pair and picasso pair I am on the fence about.

I had originally setup the system as a growout system and not a broodstock system, I just went a little crazy and now I'm paying for it.

All this will allow me to get my orginal pair back up and running at 100% again. Currently I am getting no where with all these pair and all my time.

Sorry to hear you haven't been able to get things back on track. Sometimes taking a step back and regrouping is the only way to go.

Good luck.
