Attention Members !!!!

well he is my question . I am new to the club and the forum 2 months. I am starting to buy everything for my tank. I feel that if one person in the club sees a good deal at a store they have a right to tell other friends were they received a good deal. Isn't that what the club is about, making friends and helping people out and learning. That is why I join the club. next if you don't want use to talk about lfs then don't take sponsorships from them. the club loseses the money. I also think no one should bash stores on the forum. If you see a good deal stat the good deal and where it is. but not to say I bought it at store A for a $100 dollars and store B is selling it for $150 . that has to stop
I have my favor stores and stores I will not even go to. But I will not bash the stores I don't like. From someone that knows about organization . I things need to get organized with this club. from what I seen from being a new member. sorry if I affended anyone but this is my 2 cents
 
I was a member long long ago, but left for reasons that had nothing to do with the great people of the club.
Well I got back into the hobby and this is the FIRST place I returned too.
It seems that a lot has happened for the good while I was gone but then I see this and I am a bit confused?

I see no reason why if I went to Aquatic Wildlife and got a great deal on something why I can't post where I went and the deal I got?
How is that hurting anyone? Perhaps someone else is looking for the exact same thing and instead of seaching through 10 websites or spending part of the day on the phone calling around or driving around they know what they need to know right there.

I'll admit being out of the hobby I lost my list of stores. People posting about the stores reminds me of where they are. Now I'm not going to drive to Milford (1+ hrs) just to SEE if there is anything good, but if someone posted: "ABC store in Milford has a bunch of nice frogspawn" well then a trip is deserved because all my local places don't have it. Without that post I would still be waiting for frogspawn. (as an example)

Now I'll agree that BASHING isn't right nor should it be tolerated, but posting a problem you observe at a store isn't wrong. All the sponsers should be praising us for getting the word out and also for bringing problems to light, what other business can you be in that gets so much customer feedback? Have a problem at burger king, no one cares, have a problem at a LFS and the people will stand together and show that store owner that the problem has to be fixed or they might as well close their doors. Any good business owner would fix the problem and I think would have the right to respond in the thread and say problem resolved by doing x.

Just my 2 cents. BTW I just got out of a club for this same type of petty bickering (not the same hobby though). Constructive feedback and offering solutions to a problem you see is the only way for a club to keep moving forward. Just saying this sucks and that is that is not worth posting.

Please be patient, I have only worked on it for a little while this morning. The plans are that this site will NOT be affiliated in anyway with CTARS, therefore, no one can be upset with the club for comments made.

In addition, the stores can post information about sales, events, promotions, discounts, orders coming in, whatever. They are free to post what they want. Pics of corals in stock would be welcomed along with prices and any other info.

I will pick up all the costs (actually, I already have) of the URL and hosting fees. Stores and users can post for free with less of the restrictions here on RC.

So.. what do you think? Let RC be the place we are used to for exchanging info and making trades and let the advertising and promotion be handled elsewhere?
 
As for the censorship comment, i am saying this nicely but of course there is NO tone here but maybe you need to read the rules, It is not censorship but a rule.

It is censorship, it is trying to control freedom of speech, look it up if you're confused.

It is unfair to some stores for all the free publicity , but in the same respect the publicity has been earned through quality and good prices

I see now way in how it is unfair, as long as its not against RC rules(which is isn't) its just like talking in person. It is like saying if I told tyler Store A had a great shipment in today, Store B would get mad at me for "free publicity" It is sharing a fact, a truth, and as long as there is no comparison to other stores, good OR bad, it is fine.

The whole point of this thread was to do a good thing, by trying to cut down on arguments about stores. I agreem this should be stopped, but halting all conversation about them is not the right way. Good and negative traits of stores should be said, it is important for the public to know about the stores,

HOWEVER, saying one store is better than another is not the way to do it, and i think we can all agree on that. I think the best solution to this "problem" that were having is if you see a post you think is in violation fo the rules, report it to a mod, its as simple as that.

It is right to say, this store was way over priced for X coral, or this store had a great deal.

When it gets to this store has better prices then this store, or this store is way overpriced, then it starts to get wrong. If any posts like this are noticed, simply click report to a mod, and end it.

you cant hear my tone, how can you judge my attitude?

1) It is censorship, not an extreme ammount, but by trying to get us to stop talking, it is. Read what I said, its a good idea, it isn't right to try to get us to stop talking about it. All I disagree with is how we shouldn't post about what the stores got in, or what we got and what price.
2) Please tell me my attitude, I would love to hear it. I simply saw something I thought was wrong, and gave my opinion, if you dont like my opinion, you dont have to read it, as it does not involve you personally. However I would appreciate it if you would stop commenting on my "attitude"

In my defense, that is telling us what we can and cannot say...

I do agree with him something needs to be done, and yes I do give him respect for doing something about it, I just feel some things should not be included. Thats all I've been saying this whole time, that something should be done, but not in this manner.


With that I end my participation in this thread, I've made my point and it has obviously upset some people.
 
You don't HAVE "freedom of speech" that you're talking about...you have freedom of speech, you don't have the freedom to use your freedom of speech everywhere. When you signed up to ReefCentral, you agreed to these: http://reefcentral.com/agreement.php

Well thanks to Tyler, he explained to me what is really going on here, Jeff, when I read your post, I completely misunderstood what you were trying to say, and I think alot of other people did too. I get it now, and completely get whats going on here.

i know that this is not what RC intended, but technically, doesn't this rule also prohibit us from selling stuff to each other? (i.e., 'private individuals... directly... seeking commerce')... just hoping to obfuscate the situation a little more....

by the way, with respect to 'censorship', since (as far as I can tell) this is a privately owned website, RC has the legal right to censor whatever they want (as tyler said)... of course, what is legal is not always the same as what is wise or ethical, and such censorship is probably not desirable, as the value of free expression of ideas usually outweighs any damage caused by them.... nevertheless, it is their right. if this forum were hosted on the CTARS website itself, then it would be a different issue, and whether CTARS can censor its own members would depend (i believe) on what kind of an organization it legally is (incorporated nonprofit vs private club, charitable vs not charitable, etc.)...
 
kelley_mc - Thank You for taking the time to put together the web site! I really like the concept and it would solve many of the issues here. You might consider posting it on a new thread so it doesn’t get lost in the debate. I really think it’s valuable.

The unsolicited .02 of a new member -
Censorship = bad
Individual respectful opinion = good
Biased opinion based on commercial financial interest = bad
Opinion based on individual unconnected financial interest / experience = good
Common interest in the best deal, our shared passion for the hobby and the club, helping each other, respecting and sharing differing opinions without drama or hostility, respecting the RC rules and in general playing nice in the sandbox = very good
