ATTENTION T5 using clam owners!

what would you consider the min. wattage and # of bulbs over a 20g tank to keep a single squamosa or derasa? How mature should the tank be? other care?

I have a 29g and I have a 4 strip t5 set up and my two crocea and maxima clam are doing just great. I have two acintic and two 10k bulbs all four rated at 54watts. my tank has been running for 10mths now.

do you think that a sqamosa or derasa would be able to live in a 20g long (12" tall), with 4 24 watt T5 HO bulbs? 2 10K and 2 actinic? also, were would they need to be placed? is $49 about fair for a 2.5" mostly brown w/ a little blue derasa clam?

I see no problem since your tank is low. Squamosa clams require less light than any other clam. I would place your desrsa somewhere in the middle as far as height goes, but start by placing it low and see how it does. The price sounds about right.

Squamosa's and derasa's grow quickly. Both will outgrow your tank very quickly. Opt for a little more light and get a few crocea's. Does your light have individual reflectors on the bulbs? if so you may be alright for a crocea now.

I have deresa, maxima and crocea clams under T5 HO lightning (4 x 80watt) and they are doing fine and have a good growth rate.

But skinz78 is right, derasa and squamosa will outgrow your tank...

I have one crocea in my 29 Gallon, with Aquactinics TX5 lighting.

My question is:
Do I need to raise the clam from the sand and put in on rocks?

It's been in the sand for about 30 days now, and I was told that it'd need to be closer to the lights (about 18" away from 5 bulbs). And now I'm wondering if the mantle is open far enough cause it's ingrained in my brain that I need to raise it...

I have 120W T5 and a golden maxima 6" from the surface in a 33g tank.
It's doing great. Maximas an croceas do well on rocks. They will attach themselves to the rock if they like the spot.

Can anyone give me a cool "this thread is worthless without pictures" banner?

I cannot use pms right now due to my inability to follow forum rules... therefore, I will post this here.

Sorry to the threadstarter.Im just giving the icon.- it has nothing to do with you. I happened to have one.

So I put the dude midway up the tank and 4 days later he's leaning to the side (mantle is verticle). He still opens up but I can't tell if he wants to go higher or lower.

Cmon man, talk to me, which way do you want to go!!!!

Thanks firefishie, I put him up halfway in the tank last night.
We'll see if he attaches in a day or two.

You can tell if he likes the spot if he stops moving around. Mine took a week before he found a spot he liked and attached himself. At first it was moving around too, sometimes leaning on the side as well. I just put him straight again. The mantle should open up nicely. The more light it gets the better. Maybe he just needs to get used to the more intense light as you put it up a bit higher. Straighten him up and wait a few more days and see.

I have the 24'' T-5 Aquactinics for my 20g, and my crocea is about 9'' from the top. Had it for 3 months, and I can easily see shell growth. I'd say a good inch for the top of the shell. It looks perfectly healthy. But no matter what, water quality is as important as your lighting. From what I've heard, individual reflectors are very important with t-5 lighting. This is why I chose this fixture.

When I purchased my Derasa it was a tiny thing barely 3" long.

It's been under t5 lighting for about a little over a year now and has since more than doubled in size.

I've kept it on the the Sand bed the entire time which is about 20" from the water surface.
