Hello All,

Was finally able to talk the wife into getting a 180G. I'm scheduled to pick it up this Saturday but need some advice on moving it as I have never moved anything larger than a 75G.

How many guys do you recommend on carrying it down one flight of stairs?

Do you have any tips or tricks? I was thinking about creating a makeshift ramp out of plywood and sliding it down the flight of stairs.

Did you utilize suction cups or can you recommend a set? I was only able to find Granger Suction Cups that are rated at a maximum weight of 100lbs.

Thanks in advance for all your suggestions!

Andrew

You need at least two or three guys to move it IMO. Three guys and it should be a breeze.

You to use need real large-aquarium-rated suction cups. Your LFS or local reef club might have a set that they wouldn't mind loaning you. Those are without a doubt the only way to move a big tank.

I appreciate your suggestions BigJay.

I'll have at least 3 guys... Trying to recruit 2 more. I'll have to research more on the suction cups though.

Thanks again

When I picked mine up used it was in a basement, we moved it upstairs using rope and 2x4's. You'll likely need more than just 2 or 3 guys, they're damn heavy.

I had four total to get my 180 into the basement. Straight carrying the tank is ok but when you navigating cornes and the stairs it gets hairy. 4 guys don't fit well going down the steps.

I had to stand mine up at the bottom of the stairs. I think a 180 is the biggest tank that would have made into my basement.

If your two guys have some size to em 2 people should be able to do a 180. Certainly 3 can... Rod the Reefer (who has a thread on this forum) has a video of 4 guys moving his ~244g glass tank into his home with an appearance of relative ease.

Thanks for all the responses guys. I really appreciate all the suggestions. I think I'm going to go with at least 4 guys just to be on the safe side. Most of us are aroudn the 200lb mark so I think we should be ok. I think the problem is going to lie with getting 4 huge guys with a huge tank down a stairwell. I just hope all the snow melts before this weekend!

i have tight stairs in my basement as well, needed to stand it up then we inched it down step by step. I had 3 guys and then one just standing there just in case anyone needed a quick substitute. it actually went pretty quick can just be akward
