A guy came in a while back and picked up a small betta bowl (less than 1 gallon), some gravel, water conditioner, etc, etc anyway after he asked what he needed for a tank - never specified saltwater - he says ok i'll take 2 of those clowns and 1 of those blue fishes (damsel). I say I can't sell you those cause the tank is to small and they are saltwater. So he storms out of the store annoyed.

someone comes in and he wants a tang.

ME:How big is the tank and how long it has been running.
GUY: its at least a 180 and has been running for 2 weeks.
ME: 2 weeks is way to short of a time to add a tang, why dont you try a clown or something hardy as your first fish.
GUY: this isnt the first fish.
ME: Oh ok what do you have in the tank.
GUY: a clarki, Percula, yellow tang, Naso, 2 types of puffers, 6 different aneomes, oh and a black tang, and some other fish i cant remember.
ME: you added all that in two weeks???? Half thoses fish dont even go together??? What do you have as a filterization, live rock, skimmer??
GUY: Under gravel filter, crushed coral
ME: me basically saying you need sand, skimmer, live rock, and that you need to get those fish out.
Guy: we i dont think i have enough money for that stuff.
ME: Well if you dont all those fish will probly die. And all that money too.
GUY: well i did spend about 4000 on the fish. and everyone has told me that my tank will probly crash but i think it will be fine.
ME: Ok, but i would recommed doing what i said and not adding anymore fish and giving the ones you do away.
GUY: well my wife likes them. But i will change the sand since the right side is sand, left is crushed coral, and the middle is gravel,
ME: thinking to myself OMG those fish are dead and i know he will go somewhere else and get another fish.

So he storms out of the store annoyed.

It is tough to believe how absolutly ****ed people get when you wont sell them something. I hear people complaining all the time on these boards that the LFS guy "let them come home" with something that was not right for their tank. This is the consumers fault. And the employee probably just helped someone else out who insisted on keeping pirhanas with their goldfish (true story).

Here's another that came to mind;

phone call~
him - do you guys take trade in fish?
me - yeah, what do you have?
him - a 12" leperinus (sp? - FW fish, goes with cichlids fairly well)
me - yeah, bring it in!

2nd phone call~
him - I can't catch it, do you guys have a net I can borrow?
me - yeah, stop by

guy shows up, I give him our 2 biggest nets

30 minutes later, guys shows up holding the 2 nets. I figured he either couldn't catch it or it was in a bucket in the car.
me - any luck?
him - yeah, it was tough!
me - where's the fish?
him - in the net.
<stunned silence>
me - you brought it here in the nets???
him - yeah, I only live a mile away...

Fortunately the fish made it just fine, but I was blown away that he got away with it.

OK, another. True story, not a prank, still doesn't make sense.

phone call~
her - there are tons of bubbles in my tank, how come?
me - is it FW or SW?
her - FW I think
me - does it have a hang on the back filter?
her - yes
me - is the water falling more than 1/2" into the water?
her - yeah
me - normal occurence for falling water
her - yeah, but there's lots
me - anything else in the tank?
her - a bubble filter
me -

um, yeah, about that....

In retrospect, my response should have been
"OH MY GOD!!! RUN AWAY, GET THE CHILDREN OUT OF THE HOUSE, IT'S GONNA BLOW!!!!"

yeah that's the same thing that happened when a certain colored hair* lady saw my LFS mudskipper tank

*trying to not violate the UA

These stories are hilarious! and I thought that as a newbie here I was confused and potentially screwing up!

An huge outdoor tank containing about 1000 small goldfish.
lady: i want that one (points)
me: sorry, not possible
lady: why not?
I put net in water, light ripples make it impossible to see in and fish all swim fast!
lady: oh
ffs

Woman stands staring at a display tank, points at a Yellow Tang and asks"Is that a salt water fish?"To which I reply "yes".She then points to a Naso Tang in the same tank and asks"Is that a salt water fish too?"Don't ever believe there is no such thing as a stupid question!

LOL! that is hilarious! I love the question "Is that REAL?" well ofcourse it's it real.....you're looking at it right? Do you mean "Is it alive?" the problem is the answer to that question is also "yes" so i have stopped making the distinction between the two questions and just answer "Yes it's "real"." And then mumble "...you idiot." under my breath.

Great stories all.

This one lady use to come into the store and actually talk to the fish. "Hey, how are my little babies doin' today? Oh look he's swimming towards me. HE REMEMBERS ME!!".

Then there was this one guy who wanted to put a little banded shark into a gold fish bowl LOL. He also asked if he could keep a clownfish in there too. Of course he was going to use saltwater because, ya know, he wanted to do it the right way.

And of course there were the annoyances. This one guy use to come in EVERY SINGLE DAY and ask for a water test.

What makes live rock "live"? Does it move or something? IT'S ROCK!!

Speaking of water tests, how about the guy that came in at least weekly for a free water test. We told him his phosphates were high. "Okay, I'll add some PhosGuard to my online order".
He got mad at us that we got mad at him.

love this!

love this!

Great thread a place to share lol. I love the looks I get when people look at a large bin full of Rock and water they always look for a long time Sometimes you figure they are looking for LR then they finally look at you. What is this? live Rock then the looks you get they look again I think looking for it too breath, What Live Rock for salt waterthis is where I figure if they are intrested in salt water.

also Mothers that want a couple of Nemo's for JR. 1st they ask about keeping them in a fish bowl most don't even know they are Salt water.

wilth this thread I will try to think of more and look forward to other post in those times we need a laugh

Oh and if I get one more customer that wants a a baby shark in a 50 gallon tank because it won't grow big in there I Swear I am going to scream! :uzi: :furious: :blown:

Guy calls up.

Guy - My niece had lotion on her hands and put it on the glass. How do I clean it off?
Me - Just wipe it off the glass. Your tank will be fine.
Guy - I know lotion is not good for the tank so I thought I would call. Are you sure it will be ok?
Me - Is it in the tank?
Guy - No, it is on the bottom edge.
Me - Then I am absolutely positive your tank will be fine.
Guy - Can I use windex to clean it off the glass?
Me - As long as you spray your towel away from the tank you can.
Guy - Okay, are you sure?
Me - Absolutely, if you spray your towel in another room there is no way the mist can get into the tank.
Guy - Thanks.

Ok here is a odd ball ?

Ok here is a odd ball ?

Does any other LFS get a influx of people walking in that after glacing around look at you and ask if you serve cooked or fried fish or are we the only lucky ones!
